HTC makes Super LCD screens for Desire and Nexus One official
Welcome back to our "worst kept secrets" hour, where HTC has seen fit to release a PR blast informing the world of what it already knew: the Desire and Nexus One are getting Super (duper) LCD displays to fill demand that Samsung's AMOLED division cannot. Interestingly, HTC's statement says nothing of the Droid Incredible, a close sibling to these 3.7-inch devices, but the global Nexus One and Desire are getting hooked up "later this summer." CEO Peter Chou has also helpfully explained that the visual experience on the new SLCD screens is "comparable" to AMOLED, but offers better battery performance. Color us curious to see and hear more.
HTC Introduces SLCD Display Technology To Its Portfolio
New Displays to be integrated into HTC Desire and Nexus One
Taoyuan, TAIWAN – July 26, 2010 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones, today introduced Super LCD display (SLCD) technology into a variety of HTC phones including the HTC Desire and global Nexus One later this summer. The SLCD display offers an exceptional natural balanced colour, clear contrast, broad viewing angles and improved power efficiency.
"HTC is experiencing high-demand for many of our phones, specifically our phones with 3.7 inch displays. The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand," said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. "The SLCD displays provide consumers with a comparable visual experience to HTC's current 3.7 inch displays with some additional benefits including battery performance."
SLCD is the latest generation of LCD technology that offers improved performance from earlier LCD panels including approximately five times better power management. SLCDs also offer an enhanced viewing experience with wider viewing angles that are enabled by Sony's new VSPEC III™ technology.

Wasn't Nexus One discontinued?
@Extinction
I thought it was?
Also, why not implement these into the Evo? I thought the Evo was considered one of HTC's flagship devices? Unless they're too busy trying to figure out a way around the 30fps cap on the thing....
@Extinction
they only discontinued the online google store sells
in Korea and on Vodafone they still sell them in stores
@Extinction In the US, yes. You can still get it in Canada (Rogers, Telus, Bell and Wind Mobile) and the UK (Vodafone).
@Extinction Google has stopped selling the Nexus One but other resellers and mobile carriers still sell it.

@Extinction CEO 'Peter Chou' LOL
Chou outside mtfker....
@choffy21 and in tho whole fucking EUROPE..
its selling here.. vodafone ofcourse
@Extinction
Not even Extinction knows that it extinct.
@MicrosoftOwns2
dude...not cool.
just chill
@MicrosoftOwns2
The fact that you have to come back here after getting banned for apparent reasons to anyone who has posted here in the past month or so is evidence enough of why you get instantly downranked on your new account. I hope your second account gets banned too. I'm glad the Engadget mods have been cracking down on trolls lately.
@MicrosoftOwns2 You literally killed any credibility you ever had with your disgusting racism. I hope you realise noone is interested in what you say except to point and laugh at your repetition, if I had a nickel for everytime you referred to android as an 'ugly hacked together OS' I'd have enough money to pay engadget to permanently remove you and your aliases from here.
@r34p3r ...the fps cap is no more, read all about it.
@r34p3r and so he has been banned
that has to be some kind of record sigh* the old trolls from years back at least has some intelligence and could sustain a debate these new ones are just idiots though
@Extinction
They need to make it higher res .. they need to make it have equa or greated ppi than the iPhone.
@Taller
Can you provide me with links? And I want this to be an official HTC-provided fix, and not a "fix" from XDA developers, with some custom ROM that gets rid of the cap, but also breaks the camera, along with other inadvertent issues.
@r34p3r
since htc released the kernal source all the custom roms that have the 30 fps fix , over-clock, under-clocked, etc have no issues with any hardware. This includes the Froyo roms
@JS No, they don't need to make it higher res. The pixel density of these phones is perfectly good enough - and far superior to all but the latest iPhone. The only reason the iPhone has such a crazy resolution/pixel density is so that they could easily upscale older iPhone apps (1 old pixel becomes a 2x2 square). Doubtless it looks stunning, but it's largely unnecessary and certainly not something I'm looking for in my next phone.
@r34p3r
Sprints maybe but not HTC's as it's only available in SOME parts of north America. That's a tiny Market for a "flagship".
@tobsmonster2
how is the whole USA a small part of the market it is teh third largest cellular market in the WORLD behind China and India
@Billy ROTFL u just made my day ;)
@r34p3r Or how to get the NASCAR off it.
@Extinction it was discontinued because there weren't enough AMOLED screens. And they weren't completely discontinued, only from the official google site.
@r34p3r When you said trolls were getting banned it worried me so I had to test my account. Not that I am a troll just an apple supporter who is frequently down ranked.
@DefPoet Almost right. Actually, since you can't move your phone from provider to provider as customers can do in other parts of the world, the US is about half a dozen small markets. This has its effects as phones are produced for the States. In terms of numbers, a phone produced for a US provider is the equivalent of one produced for a small market. Thanks, FCC.
@r34p3r EVO has LCD.
@tobsmonster2 Sprint's subscriber numbers exceed the population of most european countries so it's a larger potential market than the fragmented euro zone has to offer.
@DefPoet yup - still for sale through certain carriers (not in north america though)... cool that it will be getting SLCD, but being polluted by a carrier's add-ons, adds another level of suckness
@r34p3r the evo already uses an LCD screen, so there is no shortage.
@DefPoet
The same here in Spain: Vodafone still sells them..unlocked :-)
@r34p3r It is flagship device. And that's why they will not try new screens on it. just my view.
@Extinction its not discontinued see how much you people know.... google stop selling it online you have to go the the carriers retail stores or from another site
@r34p3r
i'd imagine replacing the evo4g display with this would increase the cost by a decent margin, its a decidedly larger display.
@choffy21 While the Nexus One AT&T; version is compatible with Rogers, Bell, Telus, Wind, none of them offer the phone. It is now impossible to get a Nexus One in Canada; the webstore was the only option.
Hmm, interesting indeed. I wonder how much of a battery improvement it will be?
Like it was said though, this isn't something we didn't already know.
Can SLCD screen turn pixels off like AMOLED btw....?
@Billy Nope. Which makes their supposedly better power efficiency all the more intriguing.
@Vlad Savov
AMOLED is great when you're watching something dark but sucks if you're watching something bright. I don't know about you but I don't choose what to watch on my phone based on how it will affect the battery.
@lookseehear I'd gladly change my background to black and read ebooks in white-on-black mode if it means an extra few hours on my battery.
@linuxamp
Personally I think I'd rather have a screen that has a constant power drain, it'd be easier to estimate how long it'll last as it isn't dependent on what colour page you're viewing.
I can see where you're coming from though.
Super LCD is actually really good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY6qpnoziZM
@techwhizard
Thanks for the video. From what I gather:
1) Super AMOLED
2) SLCD
3) AMOLED
4) LCD
@TareG
so it's an upgrade from the Amoled screens Nexus One & Desire had, right? Super Amoled is just on Samsung's 4 inchers if i'm not mistaken...
@techwhizard
What a ridiculously pointless video.
How many times must we go over this??
You can't judge a screen by videotaping it.... a video camera doesn't work the same way as the human eye.
Yeah, the guy can comment about what HE thinks is better, and you might be able to check out the viewing angle, but when it comes to stuff like contrast, color, sharpness and getting washed-out by other lights, it's utterly pointless to go by what you see in a video.
@Hazdaz
Great point
Imagine this on a Samsung Galaxy S. Already Super Amoled screen & with this, 1080 resolution I guess. Amazing 4inch porn experience!
looks like your enjoying it..
@shreyas
Read the article again?
@shreyas
Oh, c'mon! Nobody wants to know the size of your privates! ;)
@shreyas
Size don't matter. Its the density that counts.
Too bad that analogy doesn't apply to your 4 incher.
I love my AMOLED, long live AMOLED!
