Redistricting Reform is Under Threat
The New Majority played an instrumental role in the
passage
of Proposition 11 in 2008, prohibiting politicians from drawing their
districts’ lines and giving the power of redistricting to an
independent
Citizens Redistricting Commission. Now, a new initiative
is threatening the
voter approved redistricting reform.
The new initiative, conceived by House Speaker Nancy
Pelosi and
Congressman Howard Berman, would repeal Proposition
11 and scrap the
voter approved Citizens Redistricting Commission. Politicians,
specifically the
current democratic majority in the legislature, would
once again have the power
to draw the Senate and Assembly district lines of California.
