'Miracle' Toddler Survives After Getting Hook Lodged in Brain
Toddlers, Safety, In The News, Weird But True
A 17-month-old boy wasn't so lucky when he fell off his family's porch on July 17. He landed on a pressure washer, which embedded a metal hook in his brain, just shy of the brain's main blood vessel.
But after surviving the accident "in perfect shape," little Jessiah Jackson is being called a "miracle baby," "Good Morning America" reports.
It helped that Jackson was surrounded by so many adults trained to deal with medical emergencies. After he fell on the pressure washer, neighbor Lavern Nobels, a former volunteer firefighter, ran over to help and sawed through the metal pipe. Also, Jackson's aunt and uncle are both EMTs, so they were able to care for him before emergency workers arrived.
Holocaust Program Takes Young People to the Heart of Darkness
Teens & Tweens, In The News, Education, Amazing Kids
Polite society has driven the most overt and ugly expressions of hatred and bigotry underground -- or at least to anonymous posts on the Internet.
Which means some kids might grow up thinking the evil behind the swastika and burning cross are things of the past.
Wendy Holland isn't one of them.
She tells the Washington Post the sickness that lingers in men's hearts struck home for her when Stephen Tyrone Johns, a 39-year-old security guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, was gunned down last June by a white supremacist.
Johns was a graduate the same Temple Hills, Md., high school Holland attends.
Former Teen Queen Tiffany Defends Miley Cyrus' New Sexy Image
Celeb Kids, In The News, Media, That's Entertainment, Sex
Is Miley Cyrus too sexy too soon? Not if you ask Tiffany.
The Cyrus of her day, Tiffany -- the stage name of Tiffany Renee Darwish -- spent the better part of the '80s cutting records and touring shopping malls.
It was an age of modesty, purity and, of course, Madonna.
But even while the Material Girl was writhing around in her suggestive lacy wedding dress, most teenage girls and pop idols were fully clothed on stage. Tiffany bopped about in jeans, sneakers and long-sleeved shirts with only the usual amount of makeup.
Really, compared with some of the looks Cyrus has been sporting lately, even Madonna's '80s styles seem downright demure.
But it's just business, Tiffany tells UsMagazine.com.
Take Me Out To the Ballgame ... With the Jonas Brothers
Teens & Tweens, Celeb Kids, Music
The multitalented (and seemingly overscheduled) Jonas Brothers probably need a vacation. They're not taking one.
Instead, the ubiquitous trio is touring the country with their Road Dogs softball team (and no doubt sparking a new appreciation for the game in their legions of squealing tween fans).

Girl Calls 911 From Car as Her Mother Allegedly Drives Drunk
In The News, Weird But True, Alcohol & Drugs
A 12-year-old girl called 911 from a car on Interstate 84 in New York earlier this week. The emergency? She reported her mother was not speaking properly and was weaving into other lanes while she was driving.
Now, Jamie Hicks, 48, of Islip, N.Y., faces more than a year in jail on felony drunken driving charges.
The girl and a 10-year-old were still in the car July 25, when New York State police arrested Hicks and charged her with driving while intoxicated. According to police reports, her blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.
The New York Post reports the arrest was made at about 6 p.m.
Hicks was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on $1,000 bail and was released today.
Dream On With Rock Band Lullabies
Newborns, Just For Moms, Babies, Just For Dads, Sleep, Shopping, Music
For those about to rock, we envy you. These lullaby renditions of favorite rock songs weren't around when our teens were tots.
And while we've got nothing against Brahms, we love the idea of starting baby off right with a little AC/DC, Coldplay, Rolling Stones, Radiohead or any one of the 30 or so bands covered by Rockabye Baby to date. Soothing mellotrons, vibraphones and bells replace guitars and drums, and the volume is turned way down to protect your little one's ears.
Oh, and don't sweat the lyrics -- all the lullabies are instrumental, so even Kanye West is an option at bedtime.
Available at Rockabye Baby for $16.98.

'SpongeBob' and Other Names Our Child Wanted to Name the New Baby
Newborns, Babies, Pregnancy & Birth
That raises an interesting question: "What the $#@!?"
Moxie CrimeFighter sounds like a name another kid would come up with. Children can be extraordinarily clever when it comes to naming other children. And we're not just talking about colorful odor-based nicknames.
We asked contributors to Seed.com -- AOL's freelance website -- to share some of the names their children suggested for siblings. Here are some of the best responses.
"After my husband and I gave our daughter Sam the big job of helping us name our son, she immediately turned to us and very seriously stated 'SpongeBob.' I tried to explain that "SpongeBob" wasn't really a name. 'But Mom!' she exclaimed, 'SpongeBob is a cute name!' " -Melissa Vacca
"When our 4-year-old daughter was informed she would have a new baby brother or sister in a few months, and when asked what to name the said child, she replied, 'Let's name the baby after the dog!' Whom she also named: 'Peanut butter.'"

Do We Really Need a Breast-Feeding Cookie?
Weird But True, Breast-Feeding, Opinions
MilkMakers, Milkin' Cookies -- these are two new-ish cookies created for breast-feeding moms. They're made from, among other things, oatmeal, yeast and flax seed, all long held to help boost milk production, and anecdotal evidence (well, people posting on breast-feeding blogs) seems to indicate they work. So more power to these little teats!
Er ... treats. That being said, I do have a couple of reservations:
First off, my cookie of choice while breast-feeding did not cost $44 for 30 of them, as do the MilkMakers. It was called the "Oreo," and it was available pretty much everywhere.
Furthermore, the blogs about the breast milk-boosting cookies are filled with chipper endorsements like, "And my husband loves them, too!"
Daughter Urges Okla. Voters To Not Vote For Father
Divorce & Custody, In The News
McClain County judicial hopeful John Mantooth's daughter and son-in-law paid for the quarter-page advertisement, which features a picture of the daughter's family, highlights cases in which Mantooth has been sued and lists a website the couple started, www.donotvoteformydad.com.
Mantooth said the bad blood stems from his 1981 divorce from his daughter's mother.
"This is a family issue which should have been kept private," he said Monday. "I'm very sad about this. I'm very disappointed. I'm hurt, but I love my daughter, and I want things to get better, and I hope they will."
Jan Schill, 31, said she never has had a good relationship with her father and doesn't think he'd make a good judge.
