Influential Las Vegas punk rocker Todd Sampson, who played in the underground bands M.I.A. (no relation to the singer/rapper), Self Abuse and Samsons Army, died early Sunday morning after a performance at the city's Black Door venue. While the cause of death is unknown, the Las Vegas Weekly reports that the 46-year-old had to be helped offstage at the end of an M.I.A. show.

"He just started going down during the show," friend and local musician Rob Ruckus told the paper. "Backstage afterwards, he was totally burning up, kinda going out of it. We tried putting ice on his head, cooling him down with water ... We loaded him into the truck and got his breathing slowed down; he actually walked into his house on his own. But he started heating up again, and then he started hyperventilating, so we raced him to the hospital as fast as we could, but he stopped breathing on the way. When we got to the hospital there was no heartbeat."

Fans of influential Scottish post-rock act Mogwai have long raved about the band's live show, using words such as "blistering" and "epic." Mogwai themselves prefer the word "burning," which also happens to be the title of their first live concert film. Starting Tuesday at 3PM ET, keep it here on Spinner for a special virtual screening of the entire film, followed by a live Q&A with Mogwai guitarist Stuart Braithwaite and director Vincent Moon.

Shot over three nights at Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg, 'Burning' captures Mogwai in some rather intense moments, all depicted in black-and-white film. As far as the final version goes, Braithwaite tells Spinner that they gave Moon and Nataniel La Souanec full control. "We chose the songs, but the only entry we had into the film was in the editing," Braithwaite says. "Just really minor things."

The 'Tik Tok' singer and self-proclaimed "pervert" gave away her game in an interview with Paper Magazine. Her other go-to technique? "Cat calling dudes" while "driving around blasting Zeppelin or Sabbath."

Legendary R&B singer/songwriter Roberta Flack brought the 31st Calgary Folk Festival to a close with a note-perfect set that provided a common ground for the various generations of fans that gathered at Prince's Island Park over the previous four days. Described by Festival general manager Kerry Clarke as the only "household name" at the event, Flack managed to please both ardent and casual fans with some classic hits and a surprise Bob Marley cover.

Indie sovereign St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) took the stage at the Calgary Folk Festival Sunday night for one of the biggest shows of her career. Playing to a sold-out crowd as the undercard to headliner Roberta Flack, Clark performed with the grace and self-assurance of a seasoned pro.

The New York-based Clark focused almost exclusively on songs from her latest album, 'Actor,' whipping up a mighty storm of guitar pedal theatrics and technical wizardry, and dazzling a crowd that had spent much of its day either dancing to African grooves or pumping their fists to eastern Canadian fiddle music.

New tracks from the Boxer Rebellion and the Airborne Toxic Event are among the 16 songs anchoring the new Drew Barrymore and Justin Long film, 'Going the Distance.' For the Boxer Rebellion, the band contributes the original song 'If You Run,' as well as 'Spitting Fire' and 'Evacuate,' both plucked from their 2009 release 'Union.' But maybe even more of a coup is that they join Barrymore and Long as actors, playing themselves and performing 'If You Run.'

"The whole thing came about after our first US show last year at the Troubadour in L.A," guitarist Todd Howe tells Spinner. "Some of the guys involved with the film at New Line really loved our music and approached us to be in it. They sent over the script and it was hilarious. It was one those things we'd have been mad to turn down."

The Calgary Folk Festival closed out its Sunday daytime program with an eclectic combination of indie, dance and African rhythms, as Man Man, St. Vincent, DJ Logic and Etran Finatawa joined together under the ambitiously-named 'Mysteries of the Universe Unravelled' workshop.

It was the conclusion of a day program that showcased rare musical collaborations, including the 'Face Down, Feet First' workshop that featured reinterpretations of Neil Young songs by Ohbijou, Timber Timbre, local heroine Samantha Savage-Smith and Mercury Prize nominee Laura Marling, as well as the middle-eastern-tinged 'All Funked Up' workshop, featuring Israeli funksters Coolooloosh, Belgian Natacha Atlas and New York's DJ Logic.

The 'Mysteries' jam was one of the most anticipated workshops of the fest because all the artists seemed keen to create new collaborative music rather than just showcase their own songs, but it ultimately fell flat.
