Tua, designed by Marco Zito, is the newest addition to Foscarini’s 2010 collection.
The design of Tua is inspired by the palm of the hand containing a light: a reassuring pose transformed into a single, shaped metal plane that becomes both the support and screen for the lamp. I like the gentle bend and elegant rounded details. Hidden in the fold lies a soft light source, which is reflected off of the underside surface of the bent material. Tua would be a nice addition to a nightstand or work surface.
The Portland-based husband and wife team of James and Kricken Yaker who are Vanillawood, just opened a 900-square-foot showroom/store in Portland’s Pearl District. Vanillawood’s full-service design/build business has recently expanded to also offer an inventory of fabrics, wallpaper, lighting, mirrors, rugs, tabletop and gift items plus custom upholstery, furniture and built-in cabinetry.
Love this house by Far East Design Lab. I especially like the corrugated ceiling and odd shape. Located in Hiratsuka City, the steel structured is a little over 1200 square feet on one story.
Shay Carmon is an industrial designer from Israel who recently created a collection of furniture in collaboration with Ben Klinger.
Leaning chair
Sitting on the leaning chair is characterized by half-standing. The seat itself was made smaller to allow a short rest and a fast stand up. The wooden legs are supported by metal legs. The bent-iron seat has two cushions attached to it with a single connection.
Hye-Yeon Park may have championed the first real competition to the cuckoo. Mr. Clock is an interactive timepiece that refuses to reveal an accurate number until its audience is captive. Part art, part play…definitely smart technology.

When shopping for home furnishings it can be frustrating seeing the same pieces in multiple stores. On the flipside, if you want something custom, the time-consuming act of finding a designer and a local craftsman puts an instant kibosh on that idea. But not anymore!
Whether you’re tackling a challenging project or looking for just the right piece for your home, now there’s an online resource that makes getting a custom piece made a whole lot easier — CustomMade.com.
CustomMade is a website that allows you to scour through a community of artisans who can help make your personal vision a reality. Instead of navigating by selecting images of pre-made products, CustomMade offers a handful of search and category tools to help connect you with the ideal artisan.
The “Design It” function pairs you with a personal designer to sketch your concept, and steer you towards the appropriate artisans that deem fit for the job. As your design comes into focus, artisans bid for your custom work.
To get a better idea of how the CustomMade process works, watch the “Ted’s Bed” video above to see an unsuspecting customer walk through his design-dilemmas-turned-delights.
CustomMade’s philosophy challenges conventional mass production by celebrating and supporting local craftsmen who create quality goods made to suit the buyer. So for those who crave a less compromising design option, than head over to CustomMade.com — they offer a new height of access to the level of workmanship and style designers would expect in their homes.
I’m sure you’re probably already aware that we love milk over here, but we also love coffee. That’s why we were so excited to stumble on this great graphic poster by Plaid called The Perfect Pour. It depicts various hot, tasty coffee beverages and how they’re made.
Have you ever mingled in a room only to leave drink ring after ring on various pieces of furniture? Have you ever had a party and wished your guests would use a coaster as they move about the room? I spotted these wine glass coasters from Dimmalimm in this month’s Real Simple. They slip onto the bottom of a wine glass and move along with you as you drift around the room.
The Bernal Heights residence by SB Architects is located in San Francisco, CA. It is a more contemporary approach to a housing solution but manages to translate the needs of a family into a comprehensive layout. I’m a big fan of the kitchen island and the ceiling matching the floors. You can see accent colors here and there on a pretty neutral color palette. The cantilevered roof is a nice touch.
