NYC And Hamptons Hotels Partner For Ulitmate Summer Package

It's the question that plagues every New Yorker during the summer: to stay or not to stay? But thanks to a new partnership between The Greenwich Hotel and East Hampton Point Resort you don't have to choose.

The six night package splits your time evenly between both properties, giving you three days in the City and three out east. It begins at The Greenwich Hotel, Robert De Niro's 88-room luxury property in Manhattan's tony Tribeca neighborhood. There you'll receive a superior room, breakfast for two (daily), Champagne and fruit upon arrival, two "Shibui Toner" spa treatments, and dinner for two in the private, outdoor garden of the critically acclaimed Locanda Verde. Then it's off to the beach via a Hampton Luxury Liner, where you'll be put up in one of East Hampton Point's luxe bungalows. Breakfast comes delivered each morning, courtesy of Mary's Marvelous in Amagansett, and dinner for two awaits at the resort's restaurant. To get you through the middle of the day a picnic lunch at Georgica Beach, East Hampton's prime summer locale, has been arranged (car service to the beach, or passes for those with their own vehicles is also provided). The resort can also schedule tee times, book a private shopper or place a preferred dinner reservation. Now when you're asked if you're staying in the City or going to the Hamptons the correct response is, "yes."

(packages start at $4,600 plus tax)

New Tailored Clothing from Thomas Pink for Fall

LVMH-owned London shirtmakers and haberdashers Thomas Pink are expanding their tailoring offerings this fall with a natty new collection of wool and tweed jackets, coats and accessories. The collection takes inspiration from great British sporting events where the country's rich heritage remains in full force. Vintage motoring, bicycling and horse racing all contribute influences to a collection full of color, detail and verve. The move is fitting as the firm's name comes from an 18th century London tailor known for making sought-after foxhunting jackets. They're offering classic covert cloth wool coats with velvet collars in navy and brown windowpane; Harris tweed jackets in salt and pepper and a green and pink windowpane; a corduroy sportcoat with contrast stitching (above); a green tweed shawl collar sweater; and tweed driving caps to match. Of course there's also a wide variety of Pink's signature shirts, silk ties and pocket squares in a variety of styles and fabrics.

Kevin Pritchard's Lake Oswego Home, Estate of the Day

An article on Oregon Live recently about new Portland Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews mentioned that former general manager Kevin Pritchard's home in Lake Oswego, Oregon is for sale. I can never resist a good sports star home so I had to check it out. Pritchard owns a lovely Mediterranean style home right on the banks of Lake Oswego.

Pritchard, shown at right with Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen in 2007, spent some time playing basketball in Italy and was enchanted by Lake Como. He rebuilt this home with the idea of creating an Italian-style retreat. The home took several years to complete. The property has a courtyard with a waterfall. Inside, large windows and terraces make the most of the lake views. The home, named Tre Cascate, has a stucco and brick exterior meant to mimic the look of an antique Italian home. Three levels of hardscape patios perch over the tranquil lake. The home has five bedrooms total and there is a small cottage on the property. It is listed at $3.6 million.

Blancpain 500 Fathoms Watch Hands-On

It was highly anticipated, as well as highly controversial. The 500 Fathoms was to be the much beefier version of the classic Fifty Fathoms model from Blancpain. But was it a good idea? I first wrote about the Blancpain 500 Fathoms watch here. The current iteration of the Fifty Fathoms was cherry. A beautiful watch, in a robust case, with a killer in-house movement. Rumors were that adjusted properly, the movement could be accurate to within about a second a day - a number that is very good for a mechanical watch. For whatever reason the 500 fathoms was borne. In a larger case at 48mm in size, the 500 Fathoms has a unique look with torpedo hands and a titanium case that is water resistant to 1000 meters (not exactly 500 fathoms). Since the watch was initially announced, the dial has changed a bit. Here you get to see exactly what the production version looks like. The dial is extremely retro diver with a twist. The almost sunburst pattern on the dial is a thematic modern interpretation of the atomic symbol that was on the original Fifty Fathoms watch. Large Arabic numerals on the dial are lume filled, together with the hands. As you can see, early worries about legibility problems haven't come to pass.

Gilded Age Greetings, Cards Embellished With Precious Gems

Once upon a time, paper was precious and books and illuminated manuscripts were precious works of art. Now as we work toward a less paper-heavy society, books and other printed works are once again more valuable as works of art rather than simple reading matter. We've seen a whole spate of luxury books and Gilded Age Greetings takes the world of greeting cards back to a luxury level with a line of hand-crafted, heirloom-quality greetings embellished with 23K gold. One line, the Grand Couture line, even includes handset cabochon jewels, including amethyst, emeralds, rubies, and red and green garnets.

Rohan Marley's Mystic Morning Coffee

Rohan MarleyRohan Marley -- son of Bob Marley -- founded Marley Coffee partly to honor his father's memory.
"Bob Marley had always said he would return to farming one day," says the Marley Coffee website, "but his destiny was filled with the passion for music, and he never had the chance. With Marley Coffee, Bob's son, Rohan and friend Shane Whittle fulfill this dream and offers his family's treasures to the world."
The Marley Coffee farm is a 52 acre private estate in the lush Blue Mountains of Jamaica. Each bean is sustainably grown, ethically farmed and organic. Marley blends them into delicious brews like the sultry and sweet Jammin Java, One Love -- their floral and brightly acidic import from Ethiopia, "the birthplace of coffee," and Mystic Morning, which is full bodied and particularly divine through a French press.

Marley Coffee also happens to have another kind of character; the Marley Coffee Foundation provides soccer fields and camps to coffee-producing communities around the world, and every bag of beans you buy helps support their mission. If you're going to drink coffee, and I certainly am, why not take your habit a step beyond fair trade and actually do good with your addiciton?

Just
pour yourself a cup, put on "Three Little Birds" by his father Bob and try to be in a bad mood. I challenge you.

Tanzania's Lupita Island, a Real-Life 'Fantasy Island'

This is my mid-summer's fantasy vacation: A stay on a spectacular 130-acre private island off Africa with open-air luxury rooms set in a pristine natural habitat. Accessible only by boat. Price: If you have to ask ... (A family cottage with two bedrooms and two baths is $2,600 a night. One bedroom units rent for $863 per person or $518 for a child sharing. Meals and water sports are included.)

Guests of Lupita Island, located on Africa's Lake Tanganyika in south western Tanzania, stay in detached, open-sided thatched-roof villas with views of Africa's second largest lake. The resort provides a variety of water sports, luxury dining, relaxation, spa services and the fact that there is a very good chance no one can reach you by cell phone. That's called a getaway vacation.

The luxury resort, which completed a major renovation in June 1010, was designed to blend in with the environment. It is surrounded by dense indigenous forest, open grassland and rocky outcrops. The Lupita Island Resort accommodates guests in a 13 luxury suites and 2 presidential suites, which have private plunge pools and the option of star beds. The plunge pools are fed by a constant flow of water through the suite resembling a soothing mountain stream.

How To Avoid Niagara Falls

If there's one thing that's often said about Niagara Falls, besides "wow", it's that it's a pity that such an impressive show by Mother Nature is surrounded by such a dreadfully tacky tourist town.

Yes, you've got more than 3,000 tons of water pounding over both water falls, per second, with rainbows floating in the mist. But you've also got Tussaud' Wax Museum, Planet Hollywood and, in summer at least, hordes of sweaty tourists sporting black knee socks and sandals.

The Niagara Parks Commission appears to be engaged in an effort to change this perception, at least among its most easy drive-in market, Torontonians. It recently launched a campaign called "Shake Off the City", which portrays city dwellers confronting urban blight -- graffiti, traffic, stolen bikes -- and escaping to the wonders of the Niagara region. This portrayal of their city has evidently annoyed some Toronto-dwellers, although that apparently wasn't the intention.

The intention was to showcase the "arid side" of the region, as Joel Noden, executive director of the Niagara Parks Commission, told the Toronto Star. I presume he meant the area beyond the big-whoop waterfalls, and leaving aside clumsy urban stereotyping, he's got a good point. The Niagara Escarpment in Ontario is actually quite lovely -- with loads of hiking, the full sweep of Lake Ontario, and, a number of excellent wineries, growing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling. (The area has a strong reputation for ice wine as well, given the cold winters.)

Leaked Sketch Shows Plans For Power Cruiser From Ducati

Ducati Power Cruiser sketch – Click above to enlarge

Ducati, an Italian motorcycle manufacturer known for producing some of the highest performing race-bred motorcycles in existence, is apparently looking to branch into new and untapped markets. Evidence of such can be seen in the sketch above, which is said to have been leaked by a dealership that was privy to the company's future plans.

It's expected that Ducati will introduce the world to its power cruiser concept at the EICMA motorcycle show in Italy later this year, but the image above gives us some hints as to what we can expect. First and foremost, a liquid-cooled Testastretta V-twin engine with the Multistrada 1200's 11-degree valve overlap angle will be featured. The mill should pump out 150 or more horsepower and will be controlled by a ride-by-wire system with traction control.

Perhaps the most controversial feature amongst Ducati fans is sure to be the massive rear tire, which is held firmly in place by a single-sided swingarm. Spy shots indicate that the rear hoop may be as wide as a 240, which will certainly have negative effects on the bike's handling characteristics. In contrast, inverted front forks and monobloc calipers are up-level items included up front.

As always, Ducati will use its trademark trellis chassis, and the power cruiser will reportedly sport a reasonable 40-degree lean angle. Stay tuned for more as the EICMA Show gets closer.

Peter Jackson's Pricey New Plane

sir peter jacksonHere's something I didn't know about "Lord of the Rings" director Sir Peter Jackson, he's a plane junkie. New Zealand websites are reporting the Jackson paid around $50 million to pick up a Gulfstream G550. His new plane is able to fly non-stop from Australia to Los Angeles and will replace his older Gulfstream IV which had to make a fueling stop on the way because of its shorter range.

Jackson doesn't just like new planes, he's also a collector of World War I and replica planes and has a company, The Vintage Aviator which constructs and restores military aircraft. Around half of his vintage planes are in flying condition.

The new Gulfstream G550 will be parked in Melbourne instead of Wellington Airport as was originally thought. There was some concern about creating a hangar for the jet on short notice. The salty air in Wellington could damage a plane left sitting out in the open.

The G550 usually accommodates 12 to 16 passengers in leather seats and divans and can sleep five or six passengers. The article says that Jackson makes all the guests on his overnight flights to Hollywood wear pajamas.
