B Cubed Gets Ready; Grub Gets Snark; You Get Free Ice Cream

B3-4-1.jpgTHE MISSION - We ran into Ron Elder at his forthcoming burger-, bourbon- and wine-centric, today and noticed some new wall paintings of grapes and vines inside. The Bold Italic is so excited about this opening, they're hosting this pre-opening event, complete with backstory and tasting of the restaurants small-batch wines, burgers, sausages, desserts et al. on August 2nd, which is precisely one day before the planned grand opening. Little Mac Screws McDonalds, Changes Name to Homeroom

FriedMacNCheese.jpgToday the EaterWire was aflame with news that Allison Arevalo found a new name for her unrealized Oakland macaroni and cheese restaurant: Homeroom. You'll remember she's had a tough go of it so far, what with McDonalds cracking down on her Little Mac moniker early on. And after a month long naming contest, which prompted names like Macsterbation, Gruyay! and Hellaroni to funnel into her inbox with abandon, Arevalo and her partner Erin Wade came up with their new label independently: "We felt bizarrely grateful for the corporate evil of Mcdonalds," says Arevalo. "Because we ended up with a name that was really a better fit for our restaurant than the first one we had come up with." And even though none of the competitors won in the end, Homeroom is giving a free meal to their ten favorites upon opening, which isn't happening any time soon. In the meantime, the fried mac and cheese from 4505 Meats (pictured) might do the trick.

Street Food

Off the Grid To Haight, Mission, Civic Center, WORLD

OffTheGrid.jpgRemember when we brought up Off the Grid, the new mobile street food party with live music and booze at Fort Mason? You may not know that organizer Matt Cohen, who owns The San Francisco Cart Project, has been pushing the Recreation and Park Department to let him orchestrate similar events in other street food-inclined SF neighborhoods. And via Facebook today we learn Cohen got his way yesterday.

Which means Off the Grid is gunning for world domination >>

Dinner at Fish Story and a Clock Bar Cocktail

Eater is inundated daily with emails from crafty restaurants looking for new ways to get their names out there. Sometimes the schemes involve freebies for our dear readers, and in that case we're happy to pass on the good word:

FishStoryLogo.jpgNow the opening of Fish Story, the new sustainable seafood concept from the Lark Creek Restaurant Group, has been pushed from summer to September and they're orchestrating a friendly competition to keep hopeful followers busy in the meantime. Submit a personal fish-related story in the form of a photo with caption and you may win a spot on the restaurant's wall of stories and a complimentary meal for two at a preview dinner before the joint's much-anticipated Napa opening. Here's more info. [EaterWire]

ClockBar.jpgMichael Mina is all about celebrating his anniversaries and this month Clock Bar is doing a cocktail scavenger hunt. This is how it works: print out this bar roster; drink all ten of the cocktails listed from places like 15 Romolo, Thermidor and Gitane and then you can get a free cocktail at Clock Bar. Yes that's a lot of work and cash for one free beverage, but you'll have fun drinking your way to the prize if you like this sort of thing. [EaterWire]

Lalime's "Going Strong;" Comstock Saloon; MORE

Lalime%27s.jpgToday Bauerrific starts things off at Lalime's, the Berkeley fixture from Haig and Cindy Krikorian that's been at it for 25 years now. New chef Brian White has a few missteps, such as the timidly fried soft-shell crabs and French fries, but impeccable service and pleasant interior preserve its storied reputation: "So although the food isn't as good as I remember, even after 25 years Lalime's is deservedly going strong." And it's left with the deuce, overall. [Chron]

El%20Molino.jpgTAMALE WIRE - 7x7 food editor Sara Deseran wrote a little something on Latin restaurants along Sonoma Highway for the Tacolicious blog. She mentions Tortilleria Jalisco, Rancho Viejo and La Michoacana; but the most interesting shout out may be for El Molino, a newbie from Karen Taylor who owns the Primavera tamales gourmands have been known to rave about. SOMA- The owners of Pete's Tavern and Momo's tell us they'll be opening the adjacent 8,500-square-foot Mexican colossus, Pedro’s Cantina, on August 6th. Adding 23 more high-def plasma screens to the ballpark mix, the new joint will also bring in a 360-degree bar and a restaurant serving street-style Mexican fare (tacos, burritos, quesadillas, etc.) created by Executive Chef Damon Hall.
