UFC 116 Preview Show Featuring James Toney

By Ariel HelwaniPosted: 07/02/2010 10:53 PM ET

LAS VEGAS -- MMA Fighting enlisted the help of UFC rookie James Toney to help break down Saturday night's UFC 116 main event, and as expected, "Lights Out" was his usual entertaining self.

Our own Mike Chiappetta also stopped by to analyze the rest of the big fights on the card and offer some predictions.

Check out MMA Fighting's UFC 116 preview video below.

Lesnar Taller, Carwin Heavier, but Numbers Don't Matter Saturday

By Mike ChiappettaPosted: 07/02/2010 08:49 PM ET

LAS VEGAS -- For the first time, it seems tangible, reachable. Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin are licensed, weighed and ready to rumble at UFC 116.

After two postponements, an illness and an interim title bout, the two biggest and best heavyweights in the UFC squared off after weighing in at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Friday night.

First off, let's get a couple things out of the way. Carwin is at least an inch shorter than Lesnar. They looked the same height during the customary face-off because Carwin put his sneakers on beforehand. Second, Lesnar's official weight is indeed 265. While some believe that Nevada state athletic commission rep Keith Kizer motioned 264 and announcer Joe Rogan misspoke, MMA Fighting confirmed with Kizer that 265 is indeed the official weight.

Writer vs. Fighter: UFC 116 Predictions with Mike Swick

By Ben FowlkesPosted: 07/02/2010 07:56 PM ET

After finishing 10th out of over 2500 competitors in last week's World Series of Poker, UFC fighter Mike Swick must be feeling pretty lucky. Either that, or he was not intimidated by my 0-3 record in Writer vs. Fighter and saw a chance for an easy victory. Whatever the reason, Swick was gracious enough to agree to face me in a UFC 116 prediction contest this afternoon, and for that I thank him.

I may have gotten smoked by "Babalu" Sobral in last week's match-up, but I'm trying to stay positive. I figure it can only help me that I got Swick to make his predictions after he'd stayed up until 5 a.m. playing poker in Las Vegas, where he says he's been doing "very well."

Well Mr. Swick, prepare to have your fortunes changed. Maybe. Hopefully.

UFC 116 Weigh-In Video

By Michael David SmithPosted: 07/02/2010 06:00 PM ET

All 22 fighters participating in UFC 116 Saturday will step on the scale Friday for the UFC 116 weigh-in, and we'll have the live video right here at MMAFighting.com.

In the main event, Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin will both have to make the heavyweight limit of 265 pounds. Most heavyweights come in comfortably under 265, but both Lesnar and Carwin are behemoths who are expected to come in right at the limit. The weigh-in will also give UFC fans a good chance to see how Lesnar looks after a serious illness caused him to take a year away from the Octagon.

The weigh-in starts at 7 PM ET on Friday and the video is below.

UFC's Stephan Bonnar Will Be Back in Booth for WEC 50

By Matt EricksonPosted: 07/02/2010 05:36 PM ET

Stephan Bonnar will return to the broadcast table for WEC 50 at The Pearl at the Palms in Las Vegas on Aug. 18.

The UFC light heavyweight told the news to MMA Fighting on Wednesday, and sources close to the WEC have confirmed that Bonnar will be doing color commentary for the event alongside play-by-play voice Todd Harris.

Bonnar first worked color commentary for the promotion at WEC 47 in Columbus, Ohio, in March.

"I love doing it – to get the opportunity to do it is just a blessing," Bonnar said. "I can't believe they called me up to do it, and they liked my performance the first time and they want me back. Whenever they ask me to do it, I'm game."

War Machine Sentenced to a Year in Jail

By Ben FowlkesPosted: 07/02/2010 04:03 PM ET

After a tumultuous couple of years filled with nearly as many fights outside the cage as in it, the fighter known as War Machine is headed to jail.

According to an Associated Press report, which incorrectly identified the man formerly known as Jon Koppenhaver as an "Ultimate Fighting Championship competitor" in its opening paragraph (he was cut from the UFC in 2008 following some poorly timed remarks about the death of fellow fighter Evan Tanner), Mr. Machine pleaded guilty to a probation violation and to two felony counts of assault in San Diego on Thursday.

After narrowly avoiding incarceration for his past exploits, War Machine was sentenced to a year in jail and told to report a week after his scheduled bout with John Alessio at Tachi Palace Fights 5 on July 9, according to the report.

UFC 116: Leben Gets a Raise, Carwin Gets (Relative) Peanuts

By Michael David SmithPosted: 07/02/2010 02:45 PM ET

Chris LebenAfter taking the fight on extremely short notice, Chris Leben is getting more money for fighting at UFC 116 than he got for fighting two weeks ago at the Ultimate Fighter Finale. And if Shane Carwin thinks he's getting the short end of the pay stick on Saturday night, it's hard to blame him.

Brock Lesnar, meanwhile, is making the same base salary for UFC 116 that he got at UFC 100, while Yoshihiro Akiyama -- who's also fighting for the first time since UFC 100 -- will make a little more in base salary than he got last time, but probably a lot less once bonuses are factored into the equation.

That's the basic takeaway from the purses for the four fighters in the UFC 116 main event and co-main event, which were disclosed by Nevada State Athletic Commissioner head Keith Kizer on Friday. More details below.

Will Lesnar vs. Carwin Really Decide the Top Heavyweight in MMA?

By Michael David SmithPosted: 07/02/2010 02:15 PM ET

Next week I'll put together a new list of the Top 10 heavyweights in mixed martial arts, and for the first time since I've been making those lists, Fedor Emelianenko won't be on top. Instead (barring something unforeseeable) I'll have the Brock Lesnar-Shane Carwin winner at No. 1.

But not everyone thinks Lesnar vs. Carwin absolutely determines the top spot in the heavyweight division. Former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett and UFC commentator Joe Rogan both made recent comments in which they said the top of the heavyweight division isn't quite as clear as it might seem.
