A teacher in Peabody, Mass., found a bit of history, right in her classroom. While preparing to change rooms at school, Michelle Eugenio came upon a document from 1792, a letter discharging the debt of a Vermont militiaman who served in the Revolutionary War.

An Ohio man bicycled 800 miles from his home in Ohio to his 50th high school reunion in Massachusetts. Pete Noonan, 68, took 20 days to complete the journey, which he used to raise money for his Rotary Club's sponsorship of an orphanage in Africa.

"We were in a bind for Christmas. I had been in real estate and left for Afghanistan when the real estate market tanked in 2008. We weren’t going to have much of a Christmas at all since any money we had went to paying bills. When the Sears Heroes at Home Program came through it helped us give something to our kids and provide for them. Bailed us out. My wife and I were able to get clothes and toys for our 9 and 14 year-old sons. This kind of program definitely makes us feel like our sacrifice is worth it. It validates what we do, and helps us feel that what we do is not done in vain. It shows us that there are some grateful people out there."
