The World Socialist Web Site needs your support
Dear WSWS readers,
I am writing to appeal for you to financially support the World Socialist Web Site.
The breadth and speed of developments to which the WSWS must respond grows daily. During the last few weeks alone, the WSWS has provided extensive coverage of the mine explosion in West Virginia, the oil rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the elections in Britain, the mass strikes in Greece and the social impact of the escalating global financial crisis.
In its coverage of the environmental catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico, the WSWS has exposed and refuted the attempts of British Petroleum, the Obama administration and the capitalist media to downplay the scale and implications of the disaster. WSWS correspondent Andre Damon has provided firsthand coverage, including interviews with workers in the area and scientists. The warnings made by the WSWS—which characterized the disaster as an “American Chernobyl”—are now being vindicated as the massive scale of the oil leak has become impossible to conceal.
The role of the WSWS is unique. Thousands of readers turn to the WSWS each day for intellectually principled and politically uncompromising analysis of world events. It is the only web publication that advances a socialist and internationalist perspective for the working class.
To maintain and expand the work of the WSWS requires financial resources. It costs money to send reporters to the Gulf Coast, or to Greece, where workers are engaged in mass protests against cuts in social spending. The intensification of the political and economic crisis since 2008 has made it necessary to expand the staff of the WSWS. Moreover, resources are needed to keep up with and utilize the rapidly developing technologies involved in the production of a complex web-based publication.
The World Socialist Web Site depends on the financial support of its readers. Therefore, we ask you to contribute today to the WSWS.
David North
Chairman of the International Editorial Board of the WSWS
