The school board of Pontiac, Michigan has announced the desperate step of issuing layoff notices to all of its teachers. Residents defended the teachers and denounced conditions of poverty and decay that have been left in the wake of the General Motors plant closings and layoffs. Pontiac, a small industrial city 20 miles north of Detroit, was once a center of production for GM.
