About

We’re into both kinds of music around here– Rock AND Roll. There are no political or behavioral doctrines espoused by said music that we follow or believe in. The main objective @ SLN is to dig up lost relics connected in one way or another with R&R or in the development thereof. Despite the title and our deep love for Japanese hardcore, we will never restrict ourselves to one particular sub-genre– posts are done when inspiration strikes, not to impress with mindless trivia or any other form of meaningless know-it-all geekery.

On the writing:

Every single goddamn word on this blog was written by ME (or Mars). I never have, nor will I EVER, cut-n-paste drivel as can be found on AMG & their ilk. Files provided for purely edumacational purposes. A simple email will get ‘em removed. Visitors: Don’t be afraid to leave comments. This blogging thing can be a pain the ass, so they are always greatly appreciated. I’m not expecting y’all to fellate me, what I’m interested in is how the music affects YOU. Stories, memories… anything emotionally-connected. That is, after all, what music’s all about. Otherwise… Enjoy!

RE: your blog on Eddie Hazel is the best I have read. Eddie and I met in 1968 and were off-and-on until 1984. I never heard him called “Maggot Brain”. I believe that title was taken from “Walden” by HD Thoreau. HDT talks about smashing peoples heads only to have their brains slowly eaten away by maggots. (huge paraphrasing here). Funkadelic were into the Transcentalists at the time. I remember they called him “Smeero” and “Smedley Smorganoff”, but never Maggot Brain.

After Maggot Brain’s release, (and i’m glad you pointed out that he was 20 when he did it) Eddie went into self-destruct mode. I believe that the song was played with Jimi Hendrix in mind, not his mother. I tried to ask him about it, but he wouldn’t talk about the song or anything connected with it. He was like that, kept so much to himself. Hedrix died in June 1970, and it was later in the year that work on Maggot Brain started.

I, myself , could not have created a song like Maggot Brain because someone told me my Mom had died and I knew damn well she was alive! Hendrix was Eddie’s god. It’s just my theory, maybe he had them both in mind!

The band’s use of drugs in the late 60′s is kind of exaggerated, probably to add to the myth. G. Clinton says he had to hold Eddie and Tiki’s pay so they wouldn’t spend it all on drugs. As a witness, they rarely had to buy drugs, people were throwing drugs at them! Back then a hit of acid cost about $2.00! How broked could they go unless G. Clinton wasn’t paying them shit??

It’s truly sad that Funkadelic didn’t go off on their own. Maybe they were too young to realize how good they truly were.

When I saw Eddie in 1983, he looked really great. We spent alot of the summer together and I didn’t see him do anything like hard drugs, as a matter of fact, I only saw him drinking a beer or two and smoking cigarettes. But to let the world know that would destroy the “mythical character” of Eddie Hazel.

HA! His widow has blocked me from all of his websites! She posted a lie and i pointed it out to her on a forum. Its been a catfight ever since! I knew him before she did and she hates that! I tried to ask her about Eddie dying at his mother’s home and where was she? I told her that he asked me to marry him in 1983, so she must have been further down on his list of “I think I will Marry…..” the forum was shut down!

Gosh, I really miss him. I thought he would be around forever. Of course, he is in my heart. I loved him fiercely. I was elsewhere when he was in prison and I can’t find out when that was. Would you know? When I did see him and told him he knew better than that, he nodded his head and said, “But the Angel Dust didn’t.”

Don’t tell anyone, but he was the absolute nicest, compassionate and affectionate man I have ever known….and after 40 years of searching, I quit. There will never be another Eddie Hazel.

Peace~ pam, the unknown girlfriend of eddie hazel
