“There’s more than one way to skin a cat,” so the saying goes. There’s also more than one way to match up coloured gems, which may not sound as snappy, but it’s a lot less nasty. Joining such well-worn methods as forming lines and arranging clusters, Flipstones has you building large triangles and hexagons from smaller coloured triangles.

From Escape the Museum 1 and 2 to The Mirror Mysteries and Escape the Lost Kingdom, Gogii Games has gotten a lot of mileage out of the old "family gets separated by some sort of catastrophe and must be reunited by a heroic Mom (or occasionally Dad or the kids)" theme. If Cooking Academy on the PC is a full restaurant, then Cooking Academy for the iPhone is like a great fast food joint. It’s a little light on the sophistication, but a delicious experience nonetheless. And amazingly, it also has a great menu.

Rather, Car Town brings a more modern spin into social gaming, by creating a world around another addictive past time: cars.

Jul 28, 2010, 12:17pm

Now that Disney has bought Playdom and the battle between Zynga versus Playdom is no more, the next battle in social games will be played on a higher level.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google is developing a social games rival to take on Facebook. This is old news (TechCrunch reported earlier that Google invested $100 million in Zynga), but there are a few (admittedly, very few) interesting tidbits in the WSJ article.

Echoes of the Past: The Castle of Shadows Review

Jul 28, 2010, 10:08am

When I reviewed Echoes of the Past: Royal House of Stone I had few negative things to say about it, save that it was frustratingly short (I wrapped it in less than two hours). Heading into its sequel, I couldn’t help but keep track of the time I spent playing. Would it be another fun but frustratingly short adventure? I’m happy to report that, at around the four hour mark, I stopped checking my watch and just sat back and enjoyed the rest of the game as it unfolded. Echoes of the Past: The Castle of Shadows is not just more than twice the length of its woefully short precursor, it’s also very well designed and a heck of a lot of fun.
