Web Producer - DIS 719

The Columbus Dispatch editorial department is seeking a Web Producer to join its growing web team. This position involves a combination of content and technical duties related to transforming the work of the Dispatch editorial staff for the Dispatch.com web site and related products including the mobile edition, phone apps, news feeds, e-mail newsletters and social media sites.

Our Web Producers prepare material from The Dispatch staff for web use using a combination of proprietary software and common software applications as well as journalistic skills. They generate story and photo/graphic files and modify stories, cutlines, photos and graphics as necessary. They also work closely with newsroom staff to generate, edit and process video and audio reports and blogs while generating interactivity with web users by creating public comment areas, hosting online chats and developing reader-generated content. The producers also identify other interactive possibilities and packages and gather and/or create original and supplementary information for electronic use.

Candidates should have broad exposure to a traditional news environment including reporting, writing, copy editing, graphics and production, and must be proficient in use of the Internet. Position requires excellent spelling and grammar, and familiarity with subject areas of the traditional media – news, sports, business, features, etc. Must be proficient in both Macintosh and Windows platforms. Intermediate-level knowledge of PhotoShop and Hyper Text Markup Language is required. Must be able to work at a fast pace with minimal supervision and work early morning, weekend and night shifts as assigned. Technical knowledge related to the Internet is a plus, as is familiarity with other electronic-delivery applications.

Candidates should have a college degree in journalism, communications, English or related field plus three years’ experience in a content-production role at a daily newspaper or news/informational Web site.

Paginator - DIS703

Our Editorial Department is seeking a full-time Paginator to work in the Sports Department as part of the agate operation. Agate refers to the results, schedules and summaries that appear each day in the print Sports section and on Dispatch.com. This Paginator will work on the agate desk three to five nights a week, meet all deadlines, compile TV/radio listings for daily publication, track and maintain schedules for high school and college sports for publication and planning purposes. They will also coordinate assignments for our staff of part-time seasonal employees who take and input results and produce various agate reports. They will work with supervisors on part-time staffing needs, become proficient in the software programs used for the print edition of The Dispatch, Dispatch.com and for publishing high school sports results on Dispatch.com. Candidates need to be able to communicate effectively and professionally with phone calls and emails from the public.

Some reporting experience is preferred since there may be some reporting opportunities, but this will be primarily a full-time agate position and candidates with agate experience are encouraged to apply.

We are seeking a Sports Reporter to collect and analyze newsworthy sporting events and write news stories for publication. They will gather and verify factual information through interviews, observation, research and events in the central Ohio area.

Ideal candidates should have demonstrated job skills, the ability to communicate both orally and in writing; be able to deal effectively with the public in complex situations; have ability to conduct interviews, complete research, and organize information and materials. Our Production Department is seeking a Production Support Specialist to ensure ad production activities occur by established deadlines. You will monitor and review all ad production schedules and communicate directly with our sales staff on production concerns. This Support Specialist will provide FTP finished work to outside printers and act as the back-up for pagination, photo toning and curving processes. You will also coordinate the graphics, artwork and photos to ads in Mactive for placed Obits and act as a liaison with the production vendor, print production and editorial.
