Religion

Under limited government, most of the work of improving people's lives is done by families, schools, religious congregations, and voluntary organizations. This section of the website gathers together AEI research, books, and events focused on religion.

Feature: Public Opinion on Abortion

AEI senior fellow Karlyn Bowman has been tracking American public opinion on abortion since the 1990s. On the thirty-seventh anniversary of Roe v. Wade, AEI published her comprehensive public opinion study, which brings together many of the questions pollsters ask on abortion. Bowman's findings reinforced her claim in an article last May that a pro-life or pro-choice majority does not exist in this country. In a related article on Forbes.com, Bowman asserts that while American attitudes on abortion are clear and stable, they are deeply contradictory. Her data show that although some Americans believe abortion is an act of murder and that it is morally wrong, large majorities say it should be a personal choice between a woman and her doctor. The views that abortion is murder and that it should be a personal choice are in deep conflict.
