Nigeria's 'Bin Laden' threatens to fight on - 28 Sept 09
Nigeria's 'Bin Laden' threatens to fight on - 28 Sept 09
A Nigerian rebel leader is threatening to launch a new wave of violence in the country's oil-rich Niger Delta. Solomon Ndigbara, a commander with the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend), has become known as Nigeria's Osama Bin Laden. He says the government has broken promises made to him since Mend declared an amnesty in June. The rebels claim to be fighting for better oil wealth redistribution for Nigeria's poor, but the government accuses them of being criminals. The attacks on oil installations have seen output in the Delta region cut by 20 per cent. Although most of the various rebel groups have said willl accept the government's amnesty which ends on October 4th, Ndigbara remains defiant. Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege went to meet him.

Nigerian's claim religious massacre
Hundreds of people have died in violence between Muslims and Christians in Northern Nigeria. The clashes began six days ago in the city of Jos, but later spread to the countryside. However, Al Jazeera has obtained evidence that suggests the bloodshed from ethnic and religious violence in Nigeria could be greater than feared. Our newsteam filmed bodies dumped in wells and saw the corpses of children. Al Jazeera's Andrew Simmons travelled to the village of Kuru Jantar, just outside of Jos, where locals told him about what they are calling a massacre. 22 Jan 2010

Al Jazeera's exclusive interview with Nigeria's rebel leader - 01 Nov 09
Nigeria's main rebel group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend), is threatening to call off its ceasefire with the government if foreign oil companies do not leave their land. Henry Okah, the group's leader, told Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege that the government has not stuck to its part of the deal and that "there will be a resumption of violence very soon". Many of the armed groups argue that they are fighting for a greater share of oil revenue to remain in the Niger delta and complain of the pollution caused by the industry. Attacks on pipelines and industry facilities - along with the kidnapping of oil workers - since early 2006 have cost the world's eighth-biggest oil exporter billions of dollars a year in lost revenues and added to volatility in global energy prices. Dora Akunyili, the Nigerian minister of information, told Al Jazeera: "We need to establish peace in that region. It is only when peace is established that meaningful dialogue can follow and sustainable development would naturally be in place". Click here to watch Henry Okah's exclusive interview with Al Jazeera.

Nigerian terrorist helps introducing Patriot Act 3.0 Media reports in the US claim Washington knew about the attempt to blow up an American airliner on Christmas Day. The 23-year-old Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who had passed through security at Lagos and Amsterdam, had concealed explosives and was being watched by intelligence services in several countries. It was even reported that CIA officials had prepared a report about the suspect after his father had gone to the American embassy in Nigeria to share his concerns about his sons intentions. Despite the embassy sending a cable to the State Department and the National Counter-Terrorism Center run by the director of the national intelligence, nothing was done to stop the young terrorist, claims RT contributor and investigative journalist Wayne Madsen He [Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab] did not go from the tied terrorist database which contains half a million names to the No Fly list, said Madsen, I think it is a little bit more than somebody just dropping the ball this was not supposed to happen, of course, after 9/11 and the fixes to the US intelligence community. The journalist believes it has been a classic false flag operation. I think not only they did not take the threat seriously, they ignored the threat on purpose, blamed Madsen. Anger over Nigeria amnesty - 29 Sep 09
Anger over Nigeria amnesty - 29 Sep 09
The Nigerian government has offered amnesty to fighters of the The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend) group who have long been waging a rebellion in the country's main oil-producing region. But as the amnesty deadline runs out on Sunday, the plan is increasingly coming under scrutiny. Experts say the plan will not help in restoring calm in the region since it does not address key issues like unemployment and wealth sharing. Even ordinary Nigerians are angry, complaining that the government is ignoring them while seeking to reward armed men who caused trouble. Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege reports from inside the Niger Delta.

Nigeria rebels threaten to end ceasefire - 01 Nov 09
Nigeria rebels threaten to end ceasefire - 01 Nov 09
Here is an excerpt of Henry Okah's exclusive interview with Al Jazeera.

Deadly clashes in central Nigeria
Deadly clashes in central Nigeria
A group of Nigerians armed with guns and machetes has killed hundreds of people, including women and children, in a number of villages near the central city of Jos. Local villagers - predominantly Christian - blame Muslims for the attack. Clashes between the two communities are not uncommon due to a historical feud over control for the region's fertile farmland. Human rights groups say poor governance and a lack of accountability have exacerbated the conflict. But Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria's acting president, has responded to the latest violence by ordering his security forces to hunt down the killers and bring order to the region. Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett reports from Nigeria. [March 8, 2010]
