King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band - Dippermouth Blues (Sugarfoot Stomp) 1923
King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band - Dippermouth Blues (Sugarfoot Stomp) 1923
Joe "King" Oliver (Dec.19,1885 - April 10,1938) was a jazz cornet player and bandleader. He was particularly noted for his playing style, pioneering the use of mutes. Also a notable composer, he wrote many tunes still played regularly, including "Dippermouth Blues", "Sweet Like This", "Canal Street Blues", and "Doctor Jazz". He was the mentor and teacher of Louis Armstrong. Two of Armstrong's most famous recordings, "West End Blues" and "Weather Bird", were Oliver compositions. His influence was such that Armstrong claimed, "if it had not been for Joe Oliver, Jazz would not be what it is today". Joseph Oliver was born in Aben, Louisiana, near Donaldsonville in Ascension Parish, and moved to New Orleans in his youth. Oliver played cornet in the New Orleans brass bands and dance bands and also in the city's red-light district, Storyville. The band he co-led with trombonist Kid Ory was considered New Orleans' hottest and best in the 1910s. Oliver achieved great popularity in New Orleans across economic and racial lines, and was in demand for playing jobs from rough working class black dance halls to white society debutante parties. According to an interview at the Tulane's Hogan Jazz Archive with Oliver's widow Stella Oliver, in 1919 a fight broke out at a dance where Oliver was playing, and the police arrested Oliver and the band along with the fighters. This made Oliver decide to leave the Jim Crow South. By 1922, after travels in California, Oliver was the jazz king in ...

Elvis Presley # THE MOVIE King Creole # part 1 of 11
King Creole is an American motion picture directed by Michael Curtiz, released by Paramount Pictures on July 2, 1958. The film stars Elvis Presley, Carolyn Jones, and Walter Matthau. It is Presley's fourth movie (the third and last filmed in black & white), and adapted from the 1952 novel by Harold Robbins, A Stone for Danny Fisher. Presley plays Danny Fisher, a young, tough musician making his way in New Orleans. Matthau plays Maxie Fields, a kingpin of organized crime in the city, with Jones as Ronnie, a call girl with limited prospects. With its aspects of film noir, its relatively realistic depiction of the mix of poverty and ambition, and in the unsentimental relationships between the three principal characters, King Creole fits in the mold of films from that era like The Big Knife and Sweet Smell of Success. Most critics cite this as Presley's best film, and best acting performance. King Creole is the sixth album by Elvis Presley, issued on RCA Victor Records, LPM 1884, in September 1958, recorded in three days at Radio Recorders in Hollywood. It contains songs written and recorded expressly for the film, and peaked at #2 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart. It followed the film release by over ten weeks. The bulk of the songs originated from the stable of writers contracted to Hill and Range, the publishing company jointly owned by Presley and Colonel Tom Parker: Fred Wise, Ben Weisman, Claude Demetrius, Aaron Schroeder, Sid Tepper, and Roy C. THE KING'S SINGERS The King's Singers is an a cappella group. Their name recalls King's College in Cambridge, England, where the group was formed by six choral scholars in 1968. Although their popularity in the United Kingdom peaked in the 1970s and early 1980s, the group were fortunate to have made good contacts in the United States by this point, including Johnny Carson (who became a fan and invited them regularly onto his talk show), and began to reach wider audiences. King Creole is an American motion picture directed by Michael Curtiz, released by Paramount Pictures on July 2, 1958. The film stars Elvis Presley, Carolyn Jones, and Walter Matthau. King Oliver & His Creole Jazz Band - Dippermouth Blues (1923)
King Oliver & His Creole Jazz Band - Dippermouth Blues (1923)
Joe "King" Oliver, one of the early Jazz greats, and his Creole Jazz Band (members included ; Louis Armstrong, Lil Hardin, Baby Dodds, Bill Johnson, etc....) plays one of the most famous tune composed by Oliver, "DIppermouth Blues", for Gennett Records in 1923. This recording shows one of the good example that sound recording can preserve lots of interesting 'extemporary' moments. At the end of the recording (2: 17 ~ 2:19), you can hear a voice yelling, "Oh, Play that thing!". According to the reminiscence of Baby Dodds, it was Bill Johnson's voice. Dodds forgot his solo drum part when recording the session, and Johnson tried to fix the problem by adding that 'vocal part' . And after this, all of other performances of this tune had this vocal line. I don't have the original Gennett recording (in fact, I don't have any of Gennett records). What I have in my collection is a re-released copy from Commodore Record, made in 1943, as one of the UHCA (The United Hot Clubs of America) release series with collaborators Milt Gabler and John Hammond. Although it is actually a dubbing made from a shellac disc, and the record itself has lots of surface noise, the sound quality is still far more better than modern transfer. (as I think) Played on my Numark machine at 80rpm. I changed the speed as the 78rpm playback sounds little bit slower, uneasy, and much lower in key, but I'm not sure I 'corrected' the pitch as I don't know what the correct key was when Oliver recorded this tune ...

Louis Moreau Gottschalk (May 8, 1829 December 18, 1869) was an American composer and pianist, best known as a virtuoso performer of his own romantic piano pieces. Although he is regarded as an American composer and musician, he spent most of his working career outside of the United States. Contents [hide] 1 Biography 2 Works 3 Recordings 4 References 5 Notes 6 External links 6.1 Listening [edit] Biography Gottschalk was born to a Jewish businessman from London and a white Haitian Creole in New Orleans, where he was exposed to a wide variety of musical traditions. He had six brothers and sisters. His family lived for a time in a tiny cottage at Royal and Esplanade in the Vieux Carré. Louis later moved in with relatives at 518 Conti Street; his Grandmother Buslé and his nurse Sally had both been born in Saint-Domingue (later known as Haiti). Gottschalk played the piano from an early age and was soon recognized as a wunderkind by the New Orleans bourgeois establishment. In 1840, he gave his informal public debut at the new St. Charles Hotel. Only two years later at the age of 13, Gottschalk left the United States and sailed to Europe, as he and his father realized a classical training was required to fulfill his musical ambitions.
