G8/G20: Gearing up for the biggest security event in Canadian history

via gipfelsoli, 23 February 2010: "Surpassing the Vancouver Olympics, the Pope’s visit to Toronto and even the volatile Summit of the Americas in Quebec City, officials said yesterday the G8 and G20 summits this summer will be the largest security event in Canadian history. The federal government announced last week it would host the G20 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre June 26-27, despite the city’s expressed wishes that it be at Exhibition Place. It will be preceded by the G8 in Huntsville, Ontario..." more

Pittsburgh G20: A new testing ground for acoustic weapons

from corpwatch, 3 November 2009: "The mass mobilisation against September's G20 Summit in Pittsburgh was met with a characteristically brutal response from US Homeland 'Security'. In many ways, police repression of UK protests pales in comparison to American political policing, with activists being routinely arrested under various terrorism-related charges and local and federal law enforcement agencies rolling out military style operations, complete with temporary detention facilities and costing hundreds of thousands of dollars each..." more

BAAM Boston: Why we're winning

from BAAMBoston, 3 November 2009: "A curious property evident in the discussion of insurrection in the United States is that it gets more respect the further it occurs from home. Anarchists who would never dream of complaining that the Thessaloniki Food not Bombs is being neglected while its members amuse themselves burning banks, who could never conceive of suggesting that the Somali pirates stop seizing ships for ransom in order to start a bike repair collective, have no problem criticizing their own friends and comrades for shortchanging local projects to attend semi-annual mass mobilizations..." more

Tortuga House Update: Pennsylvania drops all charges against Madison & Wallschlager for twittering

from tortuga, 3 November 2009: "In the face of a PR nightmare, Pennsylvania authorities have withdrawn all charges against two members of Tortuga accused of using Twitter to aid protesters at the G20 summit in Pittsburgh. At a hearing today, instead of oral arguments regarding a defense motion to unseal the secret 18-page affidavit authorizing the arrests of Elliott Madison and Michael Wallschlager at a motel just outside of Pittsburgh, the prosecution immediately moved to withdraw all charges against the two before the defense had a chance to argue its case..."  more

Let the dumpsters roll! Comic about the G20

Rolling Dumpster - comic about the G20 protest in Pittsburgh

via crimethinc, 30 October 2009: "Imagine, if you will, gentle reader, the animist version of this story in which dumpsters, long accused of complicity in anarchist “lifestylism,” step out of their social role to join the social war. Free food, even when distributed via programs like Food Not Bombs, is not enough—we want freedom itself, and the dumpster does too, and it gains momentum down the hill as it rolls, alone and magnificent, directly into a pair of oblivious policemen..." more

More Pittsburgh G20 raids: "When they kick out your front door, how you gonna come?"

from infoshop, 4 October 2009: "On October 1st, 2009, at 6:00am, the Joint Terrorism Task Force (a union of local police departments and the FBI), kicked out the front door to our home - an anarchist collective house in Queens, NY, affectionately known as Tortuga. The first crashes of the battering ram were quickly followed by more upstairs, as the police broke in on 3 sleeping people, destroying bedroom doors that were unlocked..." more

Riot police officer will be charged for London G20 assault

London, Bank of England: Police Brutality, 2 April 2009

from various sources, 28 September 2009: "Sergeant Delroy Smellie will be charged with assault of Nicola Fisher and he will appear at Westminster magistrates court on 16 November 2009. He faces up to six months in prison if found guilty. Smellie, a member of the Metropolitan police's territorial support group, was suspended from duty two months ago after footage emerged of him near the Bank of England, apparently hitting Fisher, 35, with the back of his arm. He was also shown appearing to strike her on her legs with a baton as she attended a vigil for the newspaper seller Ian Tomlinson, who had died the previous day..." more

News from the Pittsburgh G20 protests

from crimethinc, 24 September 2009: "This was written the night of September 24, immediately following the events described, without time to verify all the reports summarized or assemble additional information. There may be errors; if so, we will correct them shortly.

This is on-the-spot reporting just in from the first day of the G20 summit in Pittsburgh, which has seen a great deal of spirited resistance and confrontation—perhaps as much as has occurred at any anarchist mobilization in North America in half a decade. This gushy, hastily composed account presents the context, attempts to convey the spirit of the day, and raises a few preliminary questions..." more

Police suggested "imposter" theory over Ian Tomlinson's death at G20 protests

via guardian, updated 17 October 2009: "A senior police officer who investigated the death of Ian Tomlinson told his family that the officer who struck him at the G20 demonstrations could have been a member of the public "dressed in police uniform", it emerged last night. The City of London police investigator made the comment at an emergency meeting with Tomlinson's family and the Independent Police Complaints Commission on 8 April 2009..." more

Looters stole police riot gear worth thousands of pounds when officers left their van unlocked during the London G20 protests

via policeoracle.com, updated 14 October 2009: This is one of those stories that gets funnier each time you read it. Ten bags holding batons, CS spray, helmets, shields and body armour went missing after officers left their vehicle to handle crowds at the G20 protest in London 1 April 2009. To quote: "If these kits fall into the wrong hands, ten demonstrators could turn up at the next protest and cause mayhem with batons and Mace." Just like the police, perhaps? Now you can read a discussion thread on the PoliceSpecials.com forum entitled "Has anyone lost Police Equpiment?"...  more
