Nature notes
A spectacular sight in pine woods now is the nest of a colony of wood ants. It is an enormous pyramid constructed of conifer needles, twigs and grass, and the ants swarm all over it. Wood ants are very large — about 10mm long — and are orange and dark brown. Inside the great pile are a number of queens, some males to mate with them, and worker ants who climb in the trees and bring back other insects as food. Wood ants do not have a sting, but can squirt formic acid from their rear end and can also bite with their jaws. A common ant that stings is the red ant, which nests underground, often in gardens. Our common black ants, which may live under walls and constantly come into houses, will next month be going on mating flights, with numerous queens and males meeting each other high in the sky. Afterwards the males drop down and die.
