Kashmir is know as the 'Paradise on Earth' and has for centuries captured the imagination of many writers, poets and film makers. However, after the outbreak of armed rebellion against Indian rule in 1989, India sent more than half million troops to fight Pakistani trained Kashmir militants and thousands of bunkers, made up of piled up sand bags circled with barbed wire were erected all over Indian administered Kashmir. These bunkers dominate all the major roads and approaches of the Valley, the sidewalks, most of the buildings housing government offices, markets, bridges, lakes, government run hospitals and some educational institutions. The government of India has stated that violence has declined considerably. Many of the sand bunkers are giving way to concrete ones. DNA India Mon 28 Dec 2009
