“My cup’s overflowing with life/And I fall somewhere in between it all.” -“In Between”
You may know Lukas Haas as an award-winning actor who has starred in television, on Broadway and in feature films for such directors as Steven Spielberg (Amazing Stories), Peter Weir (Witness), Mike Nichols (Waiting for Godot), Tim Burton (Mars Attacks!), Woody Allen (Everyone Says I Love You), Gus Van Zant (Last Days) and Rian Johnson (Brick).
And while Haas has been acting since he was four, he has been listening to and playing music practically as long, since his father, who played violin (his mother sang opera), turned him on to the Beatles as a youngster. That love and passion for pop and rock comes through loudly on his debut for Pulse Recordings.
“One doesn’t exclude the other,” he says about his balancing act between music and acting. “Movies take a chunk of your time, but when you’re done filming, you have time to do what you want. Each gives you breathing room for the other. I love acting, but sometimes it can be a little restrictive. You have to work within the constraints of a script, the character you're playing. Music gives me the freedom to write and play and create on my own. I can write a song in my head anytime I want, wherever I am.... ”
Working with co-producer Tim Anderson of Ima Robot, Lukas has fashioned an album of real-life narratives and mini-movies, complete with lush melodies, often accompanied by a chamber orchestra of horns, flutes and clarinet that recall his own influences. Among his collaborators on the album are Ben Harper, Jet drummer Chris Cester and Rilo Kiley’s Blake Sennett.
“Lindsay” is a romantic love song to his girlfriend spotlighting an impressive falsetto (“When I saw you the first time/You were dancing the robot/My eyes were stuck on you”), while “Kemp” tells the story of a girl he met one night who painted her nails with Sharpies like his guitar and literally fell into his lap. “Shooting Star,” which delves into his childhood, is about “getting older, looking back and forward… a hopeful song that encompasses my past.” The strummed acoustic guitar in “I See in You” is an ode to an ex-girlfriend (“So don’t ever worry/Because you are always part of me”). In the introspective “In Between,” featuring Ben Harper on slide guitar, Lukas describes how he can understand both sides in an argument, a quality he says he has utilized as an actor, where he must jump into a role and look at things from the point of view of the character he’s playing.
“Playing music is when I’m most being myself,” he says. “I'm not acting..... I'm talking about my loves, my losses, experiences that have affected me, and the things that are most important to me."
Haas got his first drum set at 10 years old, his first keyboard at 11, then started writing on guitar at 18. “That’s when I first put words and music together and built them into a complete song,” he says. After moving with his family from West Hollywood to Austin, he played in several different bands – eventually settling in Los Angeles where he formed the band Bunny with director/musician Vincent Gallo.
Whenever possible, Haas has tried to work his musical talents into the films he’s been cast in, as well as lending his songs to other films. He's performed his own songs in movies like Breakfast of Champions, Alan Rudolph’s film adaptation of the Kurt Vonnegut novel featuring Bruce Willis and Nick Nolte, in Gus Van Sant's Last Days and in the film In Quiet Night. Haas played a version of "Kemp," from the new album in David Arquette and Courtney Cox's horror satire The Tripper, in which he also starred. An instrumental version of the song also plays over the end credits of Leonardo DiCaprio's environmental documentary, The Eleventh Hour, and he has recently been recruited by director Nick Cassavetes to write a song for his upcoming film My Sister's Keeper.
Over the years, Haas has collaborated with a number of different musicians. He has opened for Macy Gray and played piano on her albums. After befriending OutKast’s Andre Benjamin, Lukas appeared in the rap duo’s video for “Roses,” going on to perform with the group on Late Night with David Letterman and MTV’s Total Request Live.
With the release of his debut album, Lukas Haas is now a dual threat as an actor and a musician.
“I think I can do justice to both,” he says. “I love combining the two. I don’t see any limits. There are no boxes. Music is something I’ll always do, whether people ever hear it or not. I'll never stop. It’s just part of me.”
Thank you for the add Lukas!!! I wish you all the best in everything you do. May you continue to be blessed. I hope one day to see you out on the road, I hope to meet you one day =) Take care and be safe =)
Hi, I want you to think about the information I have given you here, and may you enjoy your life always. This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given this day to use as you will. There may be days when you get up in the morning and things aren't the way you had hoped they would be.
That's when you have to tell yourself that things will get better. There are times when people disappoint you and let you down.
But those are the times when you must remind yourself to trust your own judgments and opinions, to keep your life focused on believing in yourself.
There will be challenges to face and changes to make in your life, and it is up to you to accept them.
constantly keep yourself headed in the right direction for you. It may not be easy at times, but in those times of struggle you will find a stronger sense of who you are.
So when the days come that are filled with frustration and unexpected responsibilities, remember to believe in yourself and all you want your life to be.
Because the challenges and changes will only help you to find the goals that you know are meant to come true for you.
sadly....the Game blog has had to be taken down....I was told by too many that they didn't have the 'time' and that the reward wasn't 'enough' (except my actuall friends...but that wasn't the point of it all) It wasn't even a Game, it was a way to help heal what's wrong with this world.....so, pass the song along, or not...try to enlighten another human being...or, not... I can no longer afford to stay emotionally invested, as to wether or not anyone here actually cares. I will continue, as I always have to simply enlighten those I talk to. Honestly though, people shouldn't need a made up game to want to help out...the state of things is sad, people....very sad. To those of you who did/do care enough...thank you.
at least I can say that I tried...I'll just wait to get my degree and try to enlighten the children I teach...
I would still like to get this dude on SNL.....to tell true...it's the only way my friends and I will get to see him perform. But again....you can help with that endeavor...or not.
hi lukas, what's up? how is your music going? i've seen that u have been in ibiza this summer!!!!! do u like it? great island no? i'm going every year in September; it's less people and more quite!!!! biz elisa
Ok, I promise I will try to keep it short...The Game blogs are posted....If you are one who ACCEPTS ALL & GIVES MUCH...and you want to help heal.. the earth, and the human race in general.....then stop by the blog...learn the Game..."Pass the Song Along"...Now, IF you are one who ACCEPTS FEW, YET TAKES ALL...and you think that there's nothing wrong with the way things are....then, Shugg, I still love you...but while the game may not be for you....at least give the song a try...or just leave a nasty post...either way...read it, don't...it's all still good.
Oh, and Lukas...feel free to stop by anything that I have associated in a way...with your name.. via. your song....not only to check it out (and maybe play yourself?), but to assure yourself of my motives...They are quite honourable.
with PEACE, LOVE, LIGHT & HOPE TO AND FOR ALL, Nim was that better?
