NICOLA PARIS - REPORTING FROM ANTARCTICA
SEA SHEPHERDFEB 10, 2009 - From the newswire: NICOLA PARIS - REPORT FROM ANTARCTICA - "South of 70 degrees. Where there is no god. If that's your thing...

"...Its 140am on the 5th of February and I can't sleep. I am looking out the porthole at a muted grey sea scape, in a state of constant twilight. Yesterday morning I was woken up at 5am by someone letting me know that two of the whaling fleets harpoon ships were suddenly flanking us as we were pacing with the Nisshin Maru - the whaling fleets factory processing ship. We had a long running battle the day beforehand and everyone was catching up on sleep.

"By the time I got my wet weather gear on and up on deck, all three harpoon boats were looming out of the mist - twisting and turning at sharp angles to try and distract us from the factory processing ship, and our main target, the Nisshin Maru..."

Support Needed to Stop Genetic Modification of Williams
NO GM THANKS MATE!FEB 3, 2009 From the newswire: On the 6th of January 2009, a group of 30 Williams farmers and their families, took to the streets to fight the WA Government's decision to commence genetically modified canola trials, allowing 1000ha of Monsanto's Roundup Ready canola to be grown this year.

Despite political lobbying and street protests, the resistance group are now calling for urgent support from activist and Indymedia communities for their struggle. Activists, film makers, free radicals or just plain healthy eaters are invited by one of the communities leaders to visit their farm and help form new strategies to combat the genetic modification of Western Australia.

State, national and international solidarity is also urgently needed as this is a once in a many millenia transition - like the agricultural revolution there's no going back.

Outrage over gang rape injustice
feministaFrom the newswire: 31 Jan 08 - The ROAR Feminist Collective, and other angry Perth residents plan to protest against a legal decision which has lead to three men accused of a violent gang rape on a Perth teenager to be released on bail. Rape charges against one of the men have been dropped and charges against the others are likely to being dropped on Monday.

ROAR spokesperson Kat says "women already have such a difficult time reporting rape and giving evidence, that to be gang raped and then know that the court have released the perpetrators on bail must be terrifying." Kat believes that the court's decision to release these men sent the message that this crime was not being taken seriously and made it much more difficult for the young woman to give evidence at trial.

"ROAR are struggling to find out all the details about the case but believe that given the serious, calculated and violent nature of the reported offence - the court's decision to release the men on bail was highly inappropriate. The court's decision to release these men on bail is an injustice to all women and cases like this are likely to deter, rather than encourage women to report rape and sexual violence" she said.

3rd June - Australia Day?
aboriginal nationsFrom the newswire: "Australians, unlike many people around the globe, have a lot to celebrate. Unfortunately celebrating Australia Day on the day a penal colony was established in NSW on the 26th January 1788, is causing personal anguish to an increasing number of Australians who are becoming more aware of their history.

"...if during World War Two the Japanese Imperial Forces had overrun Australia and Australians were dispossessed of their land, forced to speak Japanese, had their children taken away from them and still lived on the fringes of society, very few Australians would be celebrating on the day the Japanese invasion began..."

"...we continue to deny that our civilisation was built on the blood and bones of people who had lived on this continent for over 40,000 years. It is tragic that as a people we continue to use a day to celebrate our achievements that has so many negative connotations for so many indigenous and non indigenous Australians.

"The time has come to create a new public holiday to celebrate Australia Day on, or for us to find a moment in Australian history that is acceptable to both indigenous and non indigenous communities.

"Mabo Day, 3rd June, marks the day the High Court of Australia in 1992 found indigenous Australians had rights to land in law because of their prior occupation of this land..."
