Kay-Dee Volume 2 is a continuously mixed compilation of tracks collecting releases, as well as soon to be vinyl releases, from Kenny and Keb’s soulful enterprise. This time ‘round they focus heavily on the late 70s underground soul sound, with some of the best and rarest tunes in this style out for the first time. You are also getting a dash of hard edged Deep Funk, and a beautiful soulful ballad written and performed by our good friend Ricky Calloway. Again Kenny has worked his magic on the original master tapes to bring you a much better sound quality than on the original issues. Among the selections, Volume 2 features a recording by a young Patrick Adams, playing in a very new jack swing sound for 1969, and if that sounds anachronistic consider Adams fellow band mate: horn player Ramon Sweat, none other than Keith Sweat’s younger brother. The Now-Again “Super Strut” re-mix is featured here. The obscure Chosen Few Band’s “What It Takes to Live”, the 7 Miles Per Hour Band’s ”Latin Freak”, and the Spade Brigade’s “I’m Your Man,” all big spins for Keb in the past few years see their first issue here. Five sides from Florida grace this CD, Clarence Reid’s much loved “Masterpiece” and Phillip Wright’s massive rare groover “Keep Her Happy” should catch eyes, while a new recording by Kay-Dee artist Rickey Calloway shows the quality this veteran vocalist still delivers. Gary Davis’ “Remember Me” and Family Of Eve’s “I want To Be Loved By You” are featured here as Volume 2 takes the listener through a few proto house rarities close to Kenny‘s heart. Mellow Madness’ “Save The Youth” sees its first issue here and along with MUGO’s “Organize,” the two tracks deliver a message of salvation and unity through music… As Rickey Calloway says in the album’s notes, “I feel we’re giving people encouragement through our music.”

Maynard Parker’s disco masterpiece “Puddin’” gets re-mixed by Kenny Dope. As writer, arranger, and producer, Parker cooked up a funny desert here, as the lyrics spin: “Puddin is my true love, Puddin’ is my life” …say what?! What’s understood is the vibe, minimal and hypnotic – it’s a groove tied tightly to the sound Mr. Dope embodies. Side one of the 12” features a new mix which pulls from all three original versions, Side two is an instrumental study. Kenny pays respect to Baltimore classic, an effort destined to be a sweet twist for the DJ.
