About me: Gregg & Natasha Avery and Heather Nicholson were arrested and remanded into custody after 32 separate police raids, involving 700 police officers in the UK, The Netherlands and Belgium on May 1st 2007. On 30th July 2008 Gregg and Natasha entered a plea of guilty and Heather is pleading not guilty. All three of them have been in prison since their arrests in May 2007.

Gregg, Natasha and Dan Amos plead guilty to "conspiracy to blackmail" on 30th July 2008, this was due to circumstantial evidence and simply because they felt they couldn't get a fair trial. By pleading guilty they get one third off any sentence, so they can be out helping the animals sooner.
The first SHAC trial proper started in early September and Heather is a defendant (along with 4 others), it is expected that the jury will be sent out to decide in mid-late December, Gregg, Natasha and Dan plus any other activists found guilty will be sentenced most likely in January 2009.
In total 15 activists have been charged with "conspiracy to blackmail". Dan Amos pleaded guilty and 11 others are awaiting trial and due to the number of defendents their will be 2 seperate but connected "conspiricy to blackmail" trials one after each other. With the last trial (each trial may take as long as 6 months) probably not starting until Summer 2009 at the earliest. 10 SHAC activists are currently on bail, with severe bail conditions preventing them doing any animal rights activities at all, or even leading a normal life and it appears that some of them will be on bail for years. Sarah Whitehead is currently in prison for other animal rights actions.
The charges against all activists are politically motivated and pleas of guilty are due to the likelihood of being convicted by a jury and not whether they are actually guilty. The "conspiricy to blackmail" charge carries a maximum 15 year prison sentence.
There has also been another trial relating to the raids on May 1st 2007, involving activists accused of allegedly liberating a dog from abuse (this was an animal rights action but not SHAC related, however the police are claiming it is). Sarah Whitehead was found guilty of this action and given two years in prison, two other activists were aquited. There is also a case about the alleged theft of information from a employees place of work.
HLS is the worlds most exposed, brutal and vile animal testing lab, it helps no one and hurts many, please get involved if you possibly can. (please visit SHAC's website).

Gregg, Heather and Natasha have said on many occasions the best way of supporting them and the other defendents is to get out there, do demos, write letters, do what you can. There are campaigners fighting HLS all round the world so please if you can please get involved. (SHAC).
You can email Heather and Natasha through www.refusedbail.com, emails cost 30 pence (£0.30) each and are delivered directly to them. The emails are all read by prison authorities and there is no facility allowing Heather or Natasha to reply. It is however a good and relatively cheap way of showing your support, especially if your based overseas.
Who I'd like to meet: Anyone who cares about the suffering of animals and anyone who is willing to help fight against it.

Each day, all over the globe, sentient beings are deprived of all things natural to them and have their lives taken from them at the hand of mankind.
Below are a few examples of how animals used for food are devastating the environment, the hungry and the Earth. *Today, 40,000 children in the world die because of starvation. *45% of the total land mass in the U.S. is used to raise animals for food consumption. *More than half of all the water consumed in the U.S. is consumed to raise animals for food. It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce a pound of meat, but only 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat. *Animals raised for food produce 130 times the excrement of the entire human population. This means 87,000 pounds per second. *More than 260 million acres of U.S. forests have been cleared to grow crops to feed animals raised for meat. And another acre of trees disappears every eight seconds. The tropical rain forests are also being destroyed to create grazing land for cattle. *In the US, animals raised for food are fed more than 80% of the corn we grow and more than 95% of the oats grown.
Vegans contribute to virtually none of the above, however, if all of us cut our meat consumption even in half we could spare the lives of about 50 animals each per year and work to preserve our precious planet Earth.
Maggie's Law campaign UK has been launched by Davina Bowyer to fight for stiffer penalties for animal abusers. Maggie was a much loved horse who was cruelly butchered to death by cowardly thugs who broke into her paddock.

All my respect and admiration to Gregg, Natasha Avery and Heather Nicholson. I am so disgusted at this abuse!!!!! These laws were created by monsters! All people involved in that horrible lab should be the ones in jail!!!! I would have done exactly the same thing Gregg, Natasha and Heather did! I would give my own life to free abused animals. I will keep you in my prayers! You are my heroes and I know if human beings do not thank you for your sacrifice, God will! You are blessed by God! Thanks for all what you did to save those innocent creatures!
We have promised to continue the campaign until the last natural fur disappears from SIMPLE's collection... and we will keep this promise! In the name of some fad, thousands of animals die every day and it's high time to say ENOUGH for this practice! Enough silence, enough shutting our eyes to the brutal policy of companies gaining profits from animals' suffering!
