No to Israeli War Crimes - Rally Wed 31st Dec 12.30pm |
From the newswire....
PROTEST ACTION TO BE HELD OUTSIDE WESLEY CHURCH (CORNER OF WILLIAM & HAY STREET, PERTH CITY) AT 12.30PM ON WEDNEDSAY 31ST DECEMBER.
On Saturday 27th December, Ehud Olmert's government launched Operation Cast Lead, a 'military' operation which appears designed to destroy the few remnants of social infrastructure that remain functional in the Gaza Strip.
An initial wave of sixty Israeli air force F-16 fighter-bombers dropped bombs on multiple civilian targets in the Gaza Strip. This first bombardment was soon followed by another wave of attacks from unmanned drones and Apache helicopter gunships. The assault on Gaza has now entered its fourth day with no end in sight. Israel has massed artillery and battle tanks on their southern border and are openly threatening to invade the coastal territory.
The overall death toll in Gaza now stands at more than 350, with well over 1000 people injured. So far the Israeli air force have bombed several civilian police stations, a number of civilian government ministries, the Islamic University of Gaza (the oldest University in the Gaza Strip), the Emad Akal mosque, and the offices of the Al-Aqsa television station. ALL OF THESE TARGETS ARE CIVILIAN TARGETS. At least 57 civilians have been killed, many of them women and children. The rest of the dead, branded as terrorists by the largely pro-Israel mainstream media, were killed for exercising their right to resist an illegal occupation, a right enshrined in international law.
Operation Cast Lead comes in the context of an eighteen-month long illegal siege of the Gaza Strip which has led to a chronic shortage of food, fuel and medical supplies for the 1.5 million people living in the tiny coastal area.
Friends of Palestine WA calls for an immediate end to the Israeli military assault, the lifting of the siege of Gaza, and an end to the occupation of Palestine.

WA Premier reveals Kimberley gas hub site |
From the newswire: December 23, 2008: WA Premier Colin Barnett, has announced the controversial new gas hub will be located at James Price Point, 60 kilometres from Broome.
Mr Barnett says the exact site of the LNG precinct would be determined after consideration of significant cultural, heritage and environmental values of the area. "Compulsory acquisition of the land remains an option," Mr Barnett said.
Since 2007, more than 40 possible Kimberley sites have been considered, and four sites including James Price Point, were short-listed in October this year.
The Premier's preferred site is expected to face widespread revolt, with conservation groups, some indigenous groups and the Broome Shire Council opposing the development on the environmentally sensitive Dampier Peninsula. (Hands Off Country)
Environs Kimberley say they are "shocked and disappointed that James Price Point has been chosen. It is an extremely important area for the migration of humpback whales and their calves moving from their calving ground to Antarctica every year. We concerned that there may be a number of threatened species that will be impacted by the precinct that could be up to 3000 hectares."
"There are also turtles and dugongs in the area. Blasting of millions of tonnes of rock will have significant impact on the marine life. Gas tankers and supply ships working in the area will also have significant impact on the marine life there." Environs Kimberley repudiated the EPA's advice to government suggesting that the environmental impacts of an LNG precinct at James Price Point could be "managed".
The environmental group Save the Kimberley Foundation maintains that a gas processing plant should not be built anywhere in the Kimberley.

Global callout by insurgent 15 year olds in Greece |
UPDATE: ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE POLYTECHNIC OCCUPATION
DECEMBER 20 2008: From the newswire: (Edited translation of Athens Indymedia article).
On December 6, 15-yr-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos, was murdered in cold blood, with a bullet in the chest by special guards police force in the area of Exarchia - Athens Indymedia. The current Greek government has been led by Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis' center-right New Democracy party since 2004.
Global call for mothers and fathers of all 15 year olds. The call out of the collective occupation of the people:
In Greece we are all called Alexis and Michaelis... The cops kill us... They kill us with bullets to the chest, they kill us by beating us to death. Cops kill 15 year olds. Not only in Greece but throughout the world in the same way. We call for the solidarity of our parents. We call for for the solidarity of all of you - Students, workers, the unemployed, labourers, farmers and all who have children. Our teachers, our lecturers, our friends, our neighbors, all those people who resist the unjust and the unreasonable.
We are full of rage and so we should be. We are enraged and we are destroying this shell of a society you would have us inherit. No we are not of this society. We are 15 year olds and we think differently... Cops kill in the same way everywhere.
Do not become their accomplices. Those who remain silent, those who condemn our rage because of the blatent lies of the corporate media, the police and the politicians you vote for, determine our future... you are responsible and liable.
We all have one thing in common. We are 15 years old in a society that you have made for us yet without us. You never asked us, nor did you ever listen. You choke us with the ideals of wealth, of the corporations, economic growth and power.
The ideals of the broken window displays; of luxury cars, expensive clothes, jewelry watches. You flood us with rotten entertainment, food and culture saturated in convenience and stupidity and you condemn us for the broken windows of multinational chain stores who rob everyone of us.
Yes, we set fire to all that which burns up our lives, and we endure the tons of chemical tear gas thrown upon us by the police and the army. Because we don't have any other weapons. Only our hands, tangerines, plastic water bottles and stones, the odd Molotov cocktail, but we must resist, each one of us however we can, in the face of the military machine of repression and armed murderers. I ask of you to disarm the police, to disarm the murderers in uniform. I'm not asking you to save me but to stand in solidarity with me.
We invite all you reading this text, to join the struggle to change our lives and to fight injustice, to overcome the inertia of apathetic acceptance...
