Meet Ecobytes – Internet hosting for activists, artists, individuals and small businesses supporting our idea.
Log
- May 21st 2008: Today our spam filter software went on vacation due to a software upgrade. I got about a hundred spam messages within a few hours, how many did you get? :o) Anyway, it's fixed now. Sorry for that one, just makes you realise how much spam is actually blocked every day.. -Meinhard
- Mar 6th 2008: On Jan 24th our new server "Polecat" went live. This allows us have a much more generous offer (5 GB webspace, unlimited traffic) and finally to serve real "eco bytes", because it's powered by renewable energy! All existing accounts will be automatically upgraded to the new offer. Also you may have noticed our current server "Otter" to be a little faster, because it got its RAM upgraded from 1 to 2 GB. Now, isn't that great news? :)
- Mar 5th 2008: A defective fuse in the data centre caused one of our two servers to go offline from about 10pm - 11pm GMT. Sorry for any inconvenience, this was entirely outside our control. Everything is up again and no data was lost.
- Nov 30th 2007: New CAcert SSL certificate for ecobytes.net installed - Ladies and gentlemen, please click "accept" at incoming certificate warnings of mail and web clients. :)
- Oct 3rd 2007: WordPress upgraded - The blogs on our server now run WordPress 2.3. The upgrade might be a little bumpy for some and you might need to adjust your design templates, as there are a few architectural changes in the WordPress code. For details check out the WordPress 2.3 release announcement.
- Jun 8th 2007: Ecobytes active - Matthew went on a consumer awareness bike tour by the Otesha project through Canada and Meinhard is helping G8-TV in Rostock near the G8 summit in Germany. Maybe that was also the reason why we did not immediately realise that PHP pages on our server were delivered blank yesterday for a few hours (due to a nasty random bug in the PHP accelerator APC). ;) We now improved our monitoring script which works around the APC bug. Uh, and mail passwords were not accepted the night before for two hours due to complications during a routine mail software upgrade. We hope this was not causing too much trouble for our users.
- Mar 21st 2007: Secure SMTP (for sending mails via email client) was just down for 1 hour due to a bug in a Postfix upgrade. Sorry for that one.
- Mar 7th 2007: Last month's outage and a generally slower than usual performance were mainly due to growing traffic on our server. Over the last days we made several changes to the configuration (tighter Apache/PHP process and memory limits, more efficient output control script for buggy APC, deactivation of the very performance-hungry Gallery2 slideshow module) and now we're back on track. :) If you do still feel that a service or website runs slowly, please email us and we will look into it.
- Feb 21st 2007: Ecobytes was offline Friday, Feb 16th evening and most of Saturday, Feb 17th. A bug in a larger web application running on the server caused the memory to run full and repeatedly brought the system to a halt. What followed was a series of unlucky incidents while rebooting and reconfiguring the server (broken access card for data centre door, damaged RAID, blocked roads, weekend blues - to name a few). Sorry to all that suffered from this and thanks to all that helped to bring the server back up! This really wasn't our best week.
- Feb 14th 2007: Ecobytes was offline today for 3 hours starting from 11am CET. The outage was due to unexpected hardware repairs in the infrastructure of our provider's Internet backbone. Sorry for this hitting you during the most productive working hours. ;)
- Feb 5th 2007: This page was extended a bit. The hosting offer page and user list moved from benn.org to here and there is a separate server status page and an about page now.
- Dec 14th 2006: News from the Ecobytes labs - We got PHP5 and PHP4 running concurrently. So in future we can offer PHP5 to the people that ask for it. Also SSH/SCP/SFTP (encrypted file transfer) in private environments (so called chroot jails) will be available soon. Stay tuned!
- Nov 14th 2006: Webmail was unavailable today due to a little glitch in server configuration late last night. Sorry for that one!
- Aug 6th 2006: FTP access to all domains has been re-activated. Unfortunately a few domains that are not hosted on our DNS server are still offline, because they are not pointing to the IP address of our new server yet. We are working on the matter, deploying social engineering.
- Aug 1st 2006: Early in the morning "Mokey", the old server, has been switched off by our old provider as planned. "Otter" is taking over.
