Chicago Workers' Plant Occupation Ends in Victory

Hasta La Victoria Siempre! The sit-in and plant occupation at Chicago's Republic Windows and Doors ended in victory late Wednesday night, when the union announced that more than 200 workers and members of UE Local 1110 voted unanimously to accept a $1.75 million settlement that includes eight weeks of back pay, two months of continued health coverage, and compensation for unused vacation time…

"IF IT'S GONNA TAKE US TEN YEARS, WE'LL BE HERE TEN YEARS!" DECLARES HILTON COOK

Overworked housekeepers? Health benefits cost going ballistic? Seniority, sick leave, pensions gone?
All this and more, thanks to Columbia Sussex, employer of hotel workers at the Crystal City Hilton. It's no wonder workers agree: Columbia Sussex "sucks", and called a boycott against their own hotel, at an energetic picket and rally outside the Crystal City Hilton…

Finnish Neo-Nazi to Have Political Asylum Case Heard Next Summer

Holappa02.gif

The funniest thing during the court appearance of Finnish neo-Nazi Henrik Holappa (pictured here) was the makeup of all the court employees we encountered from the security guards to the clerk, to the government's attorney, right on up to the judge herself: Everyone of them, save for the security guards on the ground floor were black, and the ones on the ground floor, were Hispanic. Oh, wait, there was also a Spanish-speaking interpreter there, and she was Hispanic!

In fact, with the exception of the few lawyers here and there, the only white people in the courtroom the entire time were Holappa, deNugent and the two others that came with them!

Brian MacKenzie Infoshop to Close at End of 2008

Dear Infoshop Friends and Supporters,

For many reasons, it's been some time since we have put out an update on the status of the Infoshop. We are writing now to try to catch everyone up to speed on what's going on with us. There is a lot to say.

As many have noticed, the Infoshop has been closed considerably more than it has been open over the last few months. For some time, those of us doing the core work involved in maintaining this project have felt overwhelmed and stretched very thin. Although there has always been a steady stream of interest from willing volunteers to support the project, finding people who are committed to doing the more intensive work entailed in sustaining the project over the long term, has always been a challenge…

Support Swells for Chicago Union Workers' Factory Occupation

republic_workers_tnail.gif

The worker occupation of the Republic Windows and Doors factory on Chicago's Goose Island by members of UE (United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America) Local 1110 went into its third day on Sunday, and workers have vowed to continue the occupation until they are paid back pay and benefits, or until the plant is re-opened…

Appeal from the streets of Prince William County

Today on the streets of Woodbridge and Manassas, the temperature was in the 20s, with the wind gusting to more than 40 mph. Despite this extreme weather, nearly 200 men were huddled outside the 7-11s desperately seeking work. Many told us that they hadn't worked in weeks, and that when they finally found some, they were ripped off by their employers. About a dozen volunteers for Woodbridge Workers Committee and Mexicanos Sin Fronteras put in many dozens of hours purchasing, packing and distributing bundles of food, enough to last an individual 4 or 5 days.

It still costs about $800 each time we provide a food bundle for 200 workers. (Our goal is bi-weekly distributions through the winter). To provide a warm cap, gloves and socks, in addition to any winter coats we collect costs over $10 for each worker.
