Climate Activists Invade DC Offices of Environmental Defense

From the open publishing newswire: As the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change opened today in Poznan, Poland, a group of grassroots climate activists came to the Washington DC office of Environmental Defense to voice some complaints about their role in the shaping US proposals at the negotiations. ED is one of the largest environmental organizations in the world and has been central in promoting the approach of carbon trading as a solution to climate change, a policy which has been publicly endorsed by Obama.

Dr. Rachel Smolker of Global Justice Ecology Project read a statement, which said in part, "My father was one of the founders of this organization, which sadly I am now ashamed of. So far they have utterly failed, serving only to provide huge profits to the world's most polluting industries. Instead of protecting the environment, ED now seems primarily concerned with protecting corporate bottom lines. I can hear my father rolling over in his grave."

The activists rearranged furniture in the office, illustrating how marketing carbon is "like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic." Others held signs reading "Keep the cap, ditch the trade" and "Carbon trading is an environmental offense."

workers coop pt townsend From the open publishing newswire: The owner of a popular coffee house and bakery suddenly shut the doors of the business leaving a group of people without jobs. Those workers and some past employess are now trying to re-open the business as a worker-owned coop.

The workers have a plan to make this coffee house become a place that people can use for community organizing as well as offering bake goods and coffee and tea. First they need to raise the money to ask the bank and past owner to let them take over the loan. The workers need capital and they are asking the community and past customers to help them raise that money.

Interview With Matt Rossell on the Fur Industry

From the open publishing newswire: nterview with Matt Rossell of In Defense of Animals on the Public Access program, "A Growing Concern." The interview took place after the Fur Free Friday March, on the day after Thanksgiving. After a few minutes of footage from the days events, Matt talks about the world wide fur industry and played under cover footage taken in a fur farm in the United States. The video also depicts the dog and cat fur industry in China. Matt says that half of the fur used in garments in the world comes from China. Fur used for garments, but also for trim and accessories. This undercover footage is extremely graphic, portraying brutal and inhumane conditions as well as anal execution, the method used to kill the animals.

Black Friday Activities in Portland

"Don't Worry Keep Shopping" From the open publishing newswire: On my way back from Fur Free Friday, I dodged throngs of Christmas shoppers weaving in and out of the shops downtown. It didn't seem as crowded as last year, but there were lots and lots of people putting material consumption up on a pedestal this afternoon. Bags in hands, they bobbed blissfully through the the city, making the obligatory stop at Pioneer Square to pick up promotional wares from the corporate sponsors of tonight's tree lighting event. But then....

Fur Free Friday Report Back

From the open publishing newswire: There was a special, celebratory mood as the crowd paused at the corner where Schumacher Furs once stood. While Matt Roselle reflected on the history of the Schumacher campaign, including the attempt by the Schumacher family to sue activists for exercising their right of free speech... Shoe sellers came out of a shoe store while I stood on the sidewalk nearby. I heard one of the men saying to the other, "Uh oh, what do you think they think about all this leather leather?" (Since the shoe store was filled with leather.) The other man replied, "They probably don't like it, but this is really cool." Both stood outside and cheered the crowd.

For the most part, everyone I saw on the streets was in support of the demonstration. That was certainly good to see. The sad truth is, the fur trade is more entrenched than most of us realize, right here in Cascadia. Although fewer people are willing to risk their souls and social standing to wear fur these days, the number of trappers in Oregon has more than doubled in the past few years. Please keep educating people on all the reasons why fur is wrong, fur is unacceptable, and fur is dead.

Sea Lions on the Columbia: Decision FINALLY In... Mosman says to kill them.

From the open publishing newswire: We've all been waiting with baited breath for Mosman to make his decision public. It's been months since the oral arguments were heard in this case, and months since he said he would rule in about a week. Today, the day before Thanksgiving, when he figures the media will be away for a long holiday weekend, he finally issued his opinion: Kill the sea lions. I am expecting that this will be appealed.

Buy Nothing Day Organizers Confront the Economic Meltdown Dead On

From the open publishing newswire: The economy should be a part of life, not a steamroller crushing creativity and self-realization. Bailing out financial speculators while turning a blind eye to the imperatives of reducing working hours and building community centers is a bitter fruit of market fundamentalism

Hey jammers, creatives and meme warriors, Three more days to go! Check out our Buy Nothing Day action pyramid online for inspiration and ideas. Organize your own Buy Nothing Day jam (or join an existing one) by posting on our BND events wiki.

Every day feels like BND to most people right now. So this year in our press releases, interviews with reporters and communications with BND celebrants around the world, we are confronting the issue of the economic meltdown head-on. We're asking citizens, policy makers and pundits to examine the root causes of the crunch we're in and telling them that it was not caused by lack of regulation or toxic derivatives or the usual stuff that everybody is talking about. It is in fact our culture of excess and meaningless consumption - the glorified spending and borrowing of the past decade that's at the root of the economic crisis we in.

Here's the latest Adbusters BND Press Release. Circulate this widely--

Fuck Thanksgiving~ Stop Celebrating Genocide!!

From the open publishing newswire: Nobody but Americans celebrates Thanksgiving. It is reserved by history and the intent of "the founders" as the supremely white American holiday, the most ghoulish event on the national calendar. No Halloween of the imagination can rival the exterminationist reality that was the genesis, and remains the legacy, of the American Thanksgiving. It is the most loathsome, humanity-insulting day of the year - a pure glorification of racist barbarity.

Thanksgiving is much more than a lie - if it were that simple, an historical correction of the record of events in 1600s Massachusetts would suffice to purge the "flaw" in the national mythology. But Thanksgiving is not just a twisted fable, and the mythology it nurtures is itself inherently evil. The real-life events - subsequently revised - were perfectly understood at the time as the first, definitive triumphs of the genocidal European project in New England. The near-erasure of Native Americans in Massachusetts and, soon thereafter, from most of the remainder of the northern English colonial seaboard was the true mission of the Pilgrim enterprise - Act One of the American Dream. African Slavery commenced contemporaneously - an overlapping and ultimately inseparable Act Two.

fouad"s picture, realy nice kid. From the open publishing newswire: A federal judge ruled today that a trial in the case of Fouad Kaady, shot and killed by police in September of 2005 may proceed. As you all know, Fouad Kaady was only 27 when Officer William Bergin of the Sandy Police Department and Deputy David Willard of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office shot him only 28 seconds after responding to a call which found Kaady naked and bleeding after an accident. Fouad's family filed a lawsuit naming the two officers, the city and the county as defendants siting allegations of excessive force, civil rights violations and wrongful death.

The trial is scheduled to begin on April 28, 2009 in the courtroom of Judge Paul Papak and is on the docket to last three weeks.
