Long-Term Homelessness Needs Long-Term Solutions
In winter, homelessness becomes physically easier to imagine. The wind cuts into my coat as I hurry inside, and I get that feeling that I couldn’t bear to be out in the cold one more second.

We are quickly approaching the first day of winter and the longest night of the year. Vigils in observance of Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day will be held throughout the state, beginning this Friday.
It’s certainly an appropriate time to call attention to the problem of homelessness. Governor Rell has backed away from a commitment to fund 150 units of supportive housing, which would end homelessness for people suffering from physical or mental illness and who have been homeless for a long time.

No jail for Joe! Joe Robinson was sentenced this morning on felony first degree property damage stemming from slashed delegate bus tires during the RNC. The judge rejected nearly all the prosecutor’s wishes, sentencing Robinson instead to three years probation, a $100 fine and 100 hours of community service in an organization of his choice. The standing-room only courtroom was packed with about 50 friends and supporters, who all stood when Robinson’s name was called. Anyone thinking of using guilt by association or allowing this tactic to influence your opinion of another person might want to read what Bill Ayers has to say.
“The dishonesty of the narrative about Mr. Obama during the campaign went a step further with its assumption that if you can place two people in the same room at the same time, or if you can show that they held a conversation, shared a cup of coffee, took the bus downtown together or had any of a thousand other associations, then you have demonstrated that they share ideas, policies, outlook, influences and, especially, responsibility for each other’s behavior. There is a long and sad history of guilt by association in our political culture, and at crucial times we’ve been unable to rise above it.”

Dozens of former employees of Republic Windows and Doors continued to remain at the shuttered North Side plant late Friday, saying they’re being cheated.
The ex-workers say they found out only three days before Friday’s closing that they would be without a job. Some of them also learned they would not get the vacation they’ve earned to date or the insurance coverage they were promised. (full story and video)
Economist Barry Ritholtz has calculated the combined cost of the massive Federal Bailouts this year, and arrived at a total $4.6 Trillion so far.
That makes the bailout more expensive than all these programs combined (in adjusted dollars):
Mr. Ritholtz’s calculations are available for download, and include a lot more than the $700 Billion TARP fund.
