City Life Activists Help Find Temporary Shelter for Evicted Mattapan Family
citylife.jpgBOSTON/Mattapan - Less than twelve hours after Barack Obama spoke to the nation, following his historic election as the first black president, an African American family in the Mattapan neighborhood of Boston was evicted from their home.

Overcome by emotion, co-owner Frances Louis found it difficult to answer reporter’s questions. But housing and tenants rights activist James Brooks, part of a group of about 25 people protesting the eviction, said “it’s a bittersweet time, you know, because Obama’s theme was ‘yes we can, we can fight against injustice” and the banks are saying ‘no, you can’t.’”

Targeting Aristide in Exile
Elected Haiti's president in 1990. Its first ever democratically chosen one. By a sweeping two-thirds majority. Took office in February 1991. Deposed by an army-led coup in September with all the earmarks of being made-in-Washington. Returned to office in October 1994. Served until February 1996. According to Haitian law, he couldn't succeed himself. Reelect in November 2000 with 90% of the vote. Took office in February 2001. Served until February 29, 2004 when, in the middle of the night, US marines deposed him and forced him into exile.

Palestinian Rights Win on Question #4
palestine_wall.jpgIn Somerville and Cambridge, a little-talked about ballot question supporting the right of Palestinians to "live free from laws that give more rights to people of one religion than another" passed in both cities.

This was an effort launched by the Somerville Divestment Project (SDP) last year who have worked in coalition with organizations such as, Cambridge Residents for Human Rights (CRHR) and Jamaica Plain Residents for Human Rights (JPRHR), to highlight the needs of Palestinians to live free of intimidation on their lands.

The Anarchist’s Guide to Mass. ’08 Ballot Questions
anarchy.gifQUESTION 1 (by Adrienne)

Ballot question 1 is the Small Government Act to End the Income Tax, which would cut income taxes in half for the tax year beginning 1 January 2009 and eliminate income taxes the following year. This ballot measure was made possible by a handful of libertarians calling themselves the Committee for Small Government [whose website is yellow, of all tasteless color schemes. You’ve been warned]. They are convinced that, following the passage of this act, every citizen in Massachusetts will pocket an additional $3,600 every year. They squawk that 41% of Massachusetts’ budget is ‘wasted,’ which number they derive from asking people how much of Mass’ budget they feel is ‘wasted.’

War Veterans PTSD Study At Mass. General Hospital-A Sign Of The Times
PTSD photo.jpgHeres is a photo I took of an ad on the Boston subway. It's a medical study to find ways of treating combat PTSD in military veterans. A sign of the times-a generation of young people are being sent off to an insane war and the trauma of war has taken soldiers' sanity-hence the diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Proposition 2 – Great Concept, Horrible Implementation
marijuana-leaf.jpgAs a fervent supporter of marijuana decriminalization, I looked at the actual text of the proposed legislature recently and was horrified by what I saw. Although the proposition delivers on decriminalization, as promised, it appears to open up a new way in which people can be charged and fined with possession of marijuana.

With support for marijuana decriminalization gaining in momentum, and the national election less than a week a way, I had relatively high expectations that Massachusetts voters would be able to create some positive change in the state on Tuesday. However, this all changed recently when I read the actual text being introduced.

Spread the Wealth of Wall Street, Big Oil, Tax-Evader Fox!
faux.jpgThe fascist Fox News of Rupert Murdoch has been whipping up a mania and false fear against socialism, Marxism and “spreading the wealth” But it is protecting only its own tax evasion and the speculative profit, predatory lending and price-gouging of Wall Street and Big Oil.

Led by rabid fascists Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity, Fox News is conjuring up a false phobia and paranoia against socialism and Marxism. Frothing in the mouth, Fox right-wing commentators are spreading the false fear that socialism and Marxism will grab income from the working-class and middle-class.
