What is an Infoshop?

The Santa Barbara Infoshop is a local part of a worldwide movement to provide space and resources for ideas and activities that are difficult to find in chain bookstores and for-profit spaces.

An infoshop is a volunteer-run reading room, library and community center that offers information on issues such as politics, race and anti-racism, the environment, feminism, anti-authoritarian ideas and movements, alternative economics, gay and lesbian studies, social theory, history, fiction, non-fiction, and creative non-fiction.

Infoshops also typically serve to support local movements for social justice, environmental protection, peace, democracy, and political and economic liberation.

How the Infoshop is Run

The Santa Barbara Infoshop is run by the Santa Barbara Infoshop Collective, which consists of locals and transplants from varying ages and backgrounds, who all share a desire to build community and support democratic social movements. We pool our resources and time in order to create and support this space that we feel our community is in need of.

The SB Infoshop Collective has meetings at the Infoshop (421 Alisos) every Thursday at 6 PM. The meeting is open to those who would like to contribute resources or volunteer, and would like to be a part of this project. Decisions are made through group consensus, and without group officers.

The SBInfoshop.org Drupal Site

This is a Drupal site for SBInfoshop.org. Infoshop.org itself uses Drupal. The site maintainers are working on converting all older static HTML over to Drupal.

What is Drupal you may ask? Drupal is a content management system. In other words, a system for managing a site's content in an easy-to-use way that many people can collaborate on without needing web development skills. With the Drupal CMS, anyone of us can add and edit content like pages, news stories and events at any time from any computer in the world without having to hassle a web geek. Drupal can do a lot more than just that too. Think of everyone being able to work on the web site as the tip of the empowerment iceberg.

Incidentally, I searched for "drupal infoshop theme" on Google and result #3, #5 and #6 were to EmpowerThyself.com!

Once this site is fully operational and gets consensus approval, we can switch sbinfoshop.org over to point here.
