New release of Web Compatibility Test for Mobile Browsers — 30 July 2008
Back in April, The Mobile Web Test Suites Working Group released a first version of a test designed to assess the compatibility of mobile browsers with well-established, current and brand new Web technologies.
Since then, and thanks to the very positive feedback we've received from the community (in particular, the screenshots of the tests viewed in many various browsers), we have been able to bring quite a few improvements and bug fixes to the test, and are now happy to release a new stable version of the Web Compatibility Test for Mobile Browsers.
The test is available at:
- its canonical URI:
http://www.w3.org/2008/06/mobile-test/
- a shortened URI:
http://xrl.us/bmqox
- through a QR code:
Changes since the previous release
Since the April release, the main changes brought to the tests are:
- 4 additional tested technologies: cookies (a difficult topic on mobile devices...), IRIs (truly World-wide Web addresses), DOM Mutation events, and support for the
inputmode
attribute; - several bug fixes and improvements in the existing tests; in particular, the test for
contenteditable
now reports a more truthful result; - a complementary black/green version of the test to accommodate the needs of color-blind testers;
- the display of the name of browser rendering the test to make screenshots more informative.
You can see a more detailed view of the changes brought to the tests in the CVS repository where it resides.
Note that since the previous release (where no released browser, even on the desktop, passed), at least one desktop browser is known to pass all the tests.
Contributions welcome
As for the last release, we're interesting in getting feedback and suggestions (on our publicly archived mailing list public-mwts@w3.org), and in seeing screenshots of the new version of the test sent to www-archive@w3.org (archived).
Upcoming: testing for performance
The Working Group considers the current test to be pretty stable, and is now looking into its next work item: we are interested in exploring performances of mobile browsers, and are eager to hear any suggestions that you might have on that topic: feel free to comment on this (either in this blog, or on our mailing list)!
