Except she's going to attempt to drive, even though she's forgotten how to do so

1st gear (or low), 2nd gear (mid range) and then 3rd gear (high in some autos) and so on. Put the auto in 1st and it will stay in 1st etc. Putting it in D (or drive) allows the car to pick it's own gears at a specified rev range. An auto can be used as a manual as Adi has shown, saves on over use of brakes.

like i said, anything a manual can do an auto can do easier

Except roll start when you have a flat battery or the starter motor is rooted.

how does that work exactly?

Requirements
1: Downhill slope with no cross traffic

2: Ignition on

3: 3rd Gear engaged

4: Clutch pushed in

5: Let brake off till car starts to roll downhill, getting freinds/relatives/strangers to push is acceptable

6: Once 10-20kph acheived by rolling, let clutch out slowwwwwly

7: As you progress downhill and let the clutch out, The kinetic motion of the vehicle should now cause the engine to turn over. If vehicular electrics are working, this will cause the engine to fire of it's own accord.

8: Once car is sort of bunny-hopping, but the engine seems to trying to run, put the clutch in, and rev the engine.

9a: If this has suceeded in starting the engine, keep it running at medium revs for at least 20 minutes to build up enough charge in the battery so you can start the car normally.
Once this is acheived, take a drive for abour half an hour to make sure you've got some decent charge in the battery

9b: If it didn't work the first time, keep trying till you run out of hill, then see 9c:

9c: Call the RACV

Maybe, possibly, sort of

Having tried to keep several cars with dead alterantors running before, all I can tell you is that I hope you enjoy driving in 1st gear at 3500rpm or more. and Don't bother running lights or stereo.

You will only get as far as the remaining charge in your battery, if that.

That was one of the good things about driving my old shitbox holden.
When the alternator went, I managed to get it near home and parked at the top of a hill.

The next day, I rode my pushbike to a wrecker, bought a reco alternator for $40, rode home, grabbed some basic tools, put the new alternator in to the shitbox where I'd parked it, roll started it, had a lovley drive, and got another two years driving out of the car.

The pushbike's still cheaper

a lot of modern automatics  free wheel so you can't use the gearbox like a manual

No full automatic I am familiar with can be bump started using any method

there were some strange semi auto from europe years ago which may be an exception

I've heard you can crash-start an auto, but you need to be doing about 40kph, which takes a very long steep hill.

I'm going to stay clear of that until I've mastered the art myself.

I did a whole pile of u-turns yesterday. I hope everything is that easy.
