The Chaser is a satirical media empire which rivals Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp in all fields except power, influence, popularity and profitability.

The Chaser is the group behind ABC TV series The Election Chaser (2001), CNNNN (2002) and CNNNN Live (2003) which together have lost a host of Australian and international TV comedy awards. However, their credibility-building run of losses ended in 2004 when CNNNN tied with Kath & Kim to win the Logie for Most Outstanding TV Comedy. In 2005 they won the Logie for Most Outstanding TV Comedy with the hugely popular, The Chaser Decides (ABC).

In 2007, the team returned to ABC TV with The Chaser's War On Everything, which won them two AFI Awards (Best Comedy and Best Comedy Performer for Andrew Hansen), as well as one pending trial.

The Chaser was founded in 1999 as a fortnightly satirical newspaper produced out of a spare bedroom by initial editors Charles Firth, Craig Reucassel, Julian Morrow, Dominic Knight, who were later joined by the far more talented Andrew Hansen, Chas Licciardello and Chris Taylor. Since those humble beginnings, the Chaser team has lost its humility and has produced Classic™ comedy in all media, including print, online, radio, television and Christmas crackers.

The Chaser team also produced the official Sydney Olympics parody site www.silly2000.com and have brazenly recycled material in a series of books: The Little Read Book (2000), Bradman: The Cremated Years (2001), The War on Error (2002) and most recently Embedded with The Chaser (2003). The War on Error received the Outstanding Humorous Book prize at the inaugural Australian Comedy Awards in November 2003.

From 2001-2003, The Chaser had weekly radio programs on Triple M Sydney and the Austereo network. They also produced the weekly Chaser Report for Mike Carlton’s program on 2UE (2002) and are regular attention seekers on a host of other radio and television programs.

well wiki..(googlectual cap ON!) says the following are all meanings of "chaser"...

A chaser can be:
    * Somebody who chases somebody
    * A player in the fictional Harry Potter sport Quidditch
    * Toyota Chaser, a car
    * The Chaser, an Australian comedy group
    * Chaser (video game)
    * Captain Chaser, the English localized name of the One Piece manga series character Smoker.
    * A piece of music played or an inferior vaudeville act or motion picture presented to induce an audience to leave
    * Someone that follows logs out of the forest in order to signal a yarder engineer to stop them if they become fouled -- also called a frogger
    * A horse trained for steeple-chasing
    * A ram that has only one testicle
    * A type of dragonfly
    * A tool used for cutting the threads of screws
    * One of the edge-wheels which revolves in a trough, to grind substances to powder

    * A ship which chases another

Slang

    * One who chases women, a woman-chaser
    * (1990s) A frequent user of crack-cocaine
    * A prison guard
    * A usually either a non or lesser alcoholic drink consumed immediately after drinking a potent liquor, to dull the harsh taste of alcohol

As you can see, there are so many wonderful options to choose from! I've highlighted my favourites Smiley

I always thought it was a reference to 'ambulance chaser' - a satirical swipe at the journalistic style of the daily terror  et al. but i'm just pulling that out of my arse and have no idea really  smiley i kinda like the 'ram with one testicle' meaning though  cheesy

Does anyone know where they come up with the name "The Chaser"?

I remember Charles pitching the name to me waaaay back when I was working as a designer on a local newspaper in Bondi.

I can clearly remember the first, single page mock-up of the paper. This was back in 1996 - 1997, I think.

I can very clearly remember asking Charles 'What the fuck does the name of the paper mean?'

I cannot remember his answer.

I've heard that it's that one. Because you read it after reading the 'proper' newspapers...

Fits with their logo having a glass on it anyway.  smiley

It might have something to do with the way it is drawn -- liquids stay level in a glass when the glass is tipped.
