most autos i've been a passenger in don't have the option of dropping a gear halfway up the hill the way you can in a manual.
Mine does.

ok, one thing i want to know about autos...
why is there "drive" then "1" and "2"? when i got saddled with the auto rental car in tassie (after driven an auto once before in my life) i asked the guy what the 1 and 2 were for. he said i'd never have to use them, so not to worry about them. to which i said - if i'm not likely to use them, why are they there? they must serve SOME purpose. he just kept saying not to worry.
so are they actual gears or what?

Yeah, they're gears. Ours has 3rd as well. My parents use 2nd to go down the steep hills round our place, it gives you much more control.

1st gear (or low), 2nd gear (mid range) and then 3rd gear (high in some autos) and so on. Put the auto in 1st and it will stay in 1st etc. Putting it in D (or drive) allows the car to pick it's own gears at a specified rev range. An auto can be used as a manual as Adi has shown, saves on over use of brakes.

Just don't try and put in "R" for real fast, when you're doing 120 down a freeway.
I tried that first time I drove an auto, for some obscure reason, the car reacted badly

It wasn't the
Ferrari,
Aza. I do have other, everyday sort of cars as well as the Ferrari, you know.

Actually, I think cars are designed so that you can't do that, for the benefit of certain elements of society that will soon come back from Melbourne.

IMHO the only thing automatics are good for is in heavy stop start traffic - the kind where you only move a car length at a time and (in a manual) never get out of first gear. Then again, this kind of traffic would suck quite so badly if it wasn't for all the auto drivers who are happy to just ease forward a half car length with a single foot movement. At these (thankfully rare) moments, yes, this is sour grapes and I'm jealous. The other 99.99% of the time I am constantly thankful for my zippy little manual car where
I
decide what gear I want, dammit!
I heard recently that all of our work cars are going to have to be autos soon (most of them are now) because manuals are discriminatory
. OK, I accept there are a few disabled (or, in the interests of the PC movement, should I say "limb challenged") people who may require an auto, but surely if the majority of cars are autos that is ok? If you are not limb-challenged, you should just suck it up and learn to drive properly anyway...

After a few times driving an auto in stop/start traffic, you'll be saying "Why did I ever drive a manual?"
And given the current speed limits & road rules seemed to be designed to dumb-down every driver to match the abilities of the most 'trafficly-challenged minority', you may as well make it easy on yourself.

Yes, I just said that that was the only good thing about autos. Fortunately, although I live in a city with a completely fucked up road system, it is at least relatively free of that kind of stop-start traffic. Plus, once I move to my new house, I can pretty much guarantee not having to contend with that kind of traffic at all. So, I'll continue to be quite happy with my manual

Given her previous track record, shouldn't they be relieved?
