"Yes, I remember the barbed wire and the guard
towers and the machine guns, but they became part

“MindWar”: The Bush Propaganda Machina

Submitted by Feministe on Sat, 2008-04-19 19:55.

Though not surprising, this is incredibly disturbing — and indicative of yet another failure of a lazy corporate media and a twisted, absolutist government that seems to be taking its cues from fascist regimes:In the summer of 2005, the Bush administration confronted a fresh wave of criticism over Guantánamo Bay. The detention center had just [...]

What have you been listening to lately?

I think Black Holes and Revelations (Muse) is probably one of my favorite albums ever. There isn't a track on there that I don't like and I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite. This song, however, does get a lot of play:

Illinois Court Rules Against Forced-Sterilization of Disabled Woman

Submitted by Feministe on Sat, 2008-04-19 18:15.

Good news:Disability rights advocates and medical ethicists praised a precedent-setting ruling Friday by the Illinois Appellate Court denying a bid to sterilize a mentally disabled woman against her will. The woman, identified only as K.E.J. in court records, isn’t capable of raising a child on her own, but her guardian failed to prove that sterilization would [...]

The Presidential Wife Bake-Off

Submitted by Feministe on Sat, 2008-04-19 17:14.

Personally, I’d like to hear the Presidential candidates discuss how best to prepare and eat this.* There are a lot of things I hate about election season, but the competition of which potential First Lady has the best recipes is perhaps my least favorite. So I’m actually kind of glad that “Farfalle-gate” has broken, and [...]

Brooks and Blitzer Come Clean

Two recent statements by top American journalists tell us a lot about why their profession is in such a mess. The first is by David Brooks, who, in the midst of arguing that this week's disastrous ABC debate was actually really good, says,

The journalist’s job is to make politicians uncomfortable, to explore evasions, contradictions and vulnerabilities.
The second is by Wolf Blitzer, who says, as quoted by Digby,
If you want to be president [...] you have to expect that everything is fair game, almost every part of your life, and certainly your finances or anything like that.
There are two problems with these two statements. The first is that they are both simply inaccurate as descriptions of what the press actually does. The second is that they betray a complete misunderstanding of what the press should do.

...to describe "companies who make a practice of hiring immigrants, knowing full well some are undocumented, depend on their labor, subject them to brutal, crippling work, pay them low wages, set them in opposition to other exploited workers, and aggressively combat the workers' efforts to organize for better conditions, then turn them in to ICE?"

She goes with "motherfuckers!" I'm going to go with "wankstains," but only because motherfuckers was already taken.
