Mauvais Role: a videogame villain reinvents himself.

Today on Boing Boing tv, Mauvais Rôle ("Bad Role"), a short animated film about a computer game character who gets fed up with playing the same lame villain roles all the time -- and takes matters into his own (clawed) hands.

His quest leads him to new and increasingly more ridiculous casting calls, each one weirder than the last. And they lead him somewhere he never thought he'd end up...

Mauvais Rôle was produced by a team of students at ESRA Sup' Infograph, in France. Authors: Alan Barbier, Camille Campion, Dorian Février, Frédéric Fourier, Frédéric Lafay, Min Ma, Jean Francois Macé, Emmanuel Repérant, Jérémie Rosseau and Olivier Sicot. Full credits here, and the project's website is here.

Great animation.

One translation issue - "merde" doesn't mean "damn it".

Hey William,

Although 'merde' doesn't translate directly as 'damn it' writing 'shit' (or a more polite equivalent) would make for a less accurate translation.

While 'shit' is technically the closer word, it's English meaning is much more harsh and has less broad nuance than in French. (For instance, when you wish someone luck in the theatre, in English you say 'break a leg' while in French you say, 'merde'.)

In this context, "damn it" is the best translation.

And with that I complete my Internet nit-pick of the day!

And thus, the game Boogie was born.

His record player spins backward - anyone else notice that? He must be a villain, he listens to the subliminal devil messages.

Fantastic work, i wish there would be a full movie like this, it would be great they could elaborate more on each game, just imagine him trying to hookup a girl in the sims!

This truly made my day. Leave it to the French, hey?

Dragonfrog beat me to it! But I guess we're showing our age in knowing how those ancient contraptions actually work. Conversely, that means the animation was produced by a bunch of teenagers...?
