Victory for Brighton bin wildcat

After two days on wildcat strike, refuse workers at Brighton's Hollingdean Depot have won their fight against management bullying.

The striking bin staff had been complaining about management bullying after staff refused to double their workload due to lack of vehicles and under-staffing. As part of what workers called management's "bully tactics", four refuse workers had been moved onto different crews sparking anger amongst the depot and leading to the wildcat action.

5,000 auto-workers on wildcat in Vietnam

More than 5,000 workers in Hai Phong City, 60 miles south east of Hanoi began a strike yesterday.

Yazaki Haiphong Vietnam Co, a Japanese car-part manufacturer, is based in Nomura Industrial Park, where 2,000 workers from different companies were on strike earlier this month for similar grievances. Wages were increased in January, but pensions and bonuses were cut.

Brighton refuse workers on wildcat strike

200 refuse and recycling workers from Brighton and Hove City Council walked out today over management bullying.

Staff at the Hollingdean Depot downed tools on Wednesday morning in retaliation to having tightly-knit crews broken up by managers. Four men have reportedly been moved from one lorry to another as management try to address the problem. Another worker said his cousin, who also works at the depot, had been "punished" for having time off sick by being put onto another shift.

Malaysia: Bus drivers wildcat ends

Bus drivers at RapidPenang in Malaysia ended a one-day wildcat strike last week after talks with management.

Drivers demonstrated outside the Sungai Nibong bus depot during the strike, demanding increases in salaries and incentives, and for outstanding traffic summonses to be settled by RapidPenang.

Bahrain: construction workers strike

After a successful 750-strong two-day strike, 1300 workers at another site have also downed tools.

The first strike was by workers at the Almoayyed Contracting Group, workers were protesting at salaries ranging from 60 to 85 Bahrain dinars (£82-116) They initially demanded a rise to between BHD 100 and BHD 120. The head of the group countered that workers were in fact being paid 75 to 150 dinars a month, he also claimed that only 300 workers joined the strike.

India: Mumbai taxi drivers strike against violence

Taxi drivers in Mumbai launched the wildcat on Thursday after the offices of the Bombay Taxi Union were attacked.

The strike which involved most of Mumbai's 55,000 taxi drivers was called off after two hours, after ministers made assurances over security. State home secretary Chitkala Zutshi also attempted to downplay the violence: "All miscreants will be dealt with severely. We mean to maintain law and order.

Shannon air traffic controllers wildcat

Air traffic controllers at Shannon Airport were on wildcat strike for two hours this evening as part of a long running dispute.

The strike follows an unofficial overtime ban at Dublin airport last month. Ryanair claimed that flights from Dublin would also be affected by the strike.

Edinburgh rail workers in wildcat strike

Rail signallers in Edinburgh went on wildcat strike, bringing the station to a standstill for an hour on Monday.

The action at Edinburgh's Waverly station was taken in a dispute over the provision of cover for breaks. David Simpson, of Network Rail in Scotland, said the "deliberately disruptive, unprovoked action" was "completely unacceptable".

Ian MacIntyre, the RMT's regional organiser for Scotland, was reported as saying: "Our members took the action in the interests of safety.

Walkout at Wulvern Housing

Tradesmen at Wulvern Housing in Cheshire have walked off the job after a colleague was suspended today.

The non-profit Housing Association manages former council housing in South Cheshire. A spokeman warned the striking workers that the strike was unofficial, claiming that had brought in scabs as to ensure 'services will not be affected' and that they were sure that workers would return to work tomorrow, according to icCheshire. The company has also contacted the relevant trade unions.

Bangladeshi garment worker murdered by bosses - and other developments

Last Wednesday (30th Jan) two workers in World Dresses Ltd, Mirapur, Dhaka, were attacked and beaten by management staff at the end of an evening shift.

Khokon and Malek were apparently almost the last of the workforce on the premises at 8pm, as they were washing themselves before leaving.
