WATERTOWN, New York - Iraq war veterans now stationed at a base here in upstate New York say that morale among US soldiers in the country is so poor, many are simply parking their Humvees and pretending to be on patrol, a practice dubbed "search and avoid" missions.

With General Petraeus claiming significant progress in Iraq, United for Peace and Justice, the largest national coalition of peace organizations with some 1,400 member groups, deplores his misleading and cynical report to Congress. The "surge" of U.S. forces in Iraq has not led to security, stability or peace. In fact, this past summer was the deadliest since the war began in 2003. General Petraeus' recommendation to withdraw one Marine unit this month and a bridge combat team sometime in December comes nowhere near ending the U.S. military engagement in Iraq.

TROY – The Road to Freedom Bus Tour, a yearlong, educational and promotional cross-country tour stops in Troy to tell the story of disability rights.

The Independent Living Center of the Hudson Valley hosts this afternoon and evening of events, including a fundraising dinner for The Sanctuary for Independent Media and a free exhibition of information and artwork. Everything takes place inside the Atrium Wednesday, September 5th, 2007, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 41 Third Street in downtown Troy.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law 17 years ago. The ADA was intended to grant people with disabilities full access to life within the able-bodied community. However, civil rights protections for people with disabilities are not securely in place.

ALBANY, SARATOGA, HUDSON, VORHEESVILLE, HILLSDALE – On Tuesday, August 28, members of MoveOn.org Political Action in Capital Region cities & towns will hold rallies & candlelight vigils to call on Congress to vote to end the war in September.

“It’s time for the Bush Administration to stop looking through rose-colored glasses and realize that the surge has been a total failure,” said Robert Alft, local MoveOn member and Vietnam era Veteran. “Representatives McNulty and Gillibrand must Stand Up in September and vote to end this religious civil war that can’t be won,” concluded Alft.

Participants in the vigil will read from a “War Toll Calendar” to honor and remember the soldiers that have died in the past year in the unwinnable religious civil war in Iraq.
