SDIMC Temporary Newswire is Open for Publishing
The San Diego Indymedia website has been down since late August because of tech problems, but a temporary newswire dedicated to San Diego related content has been created on Indybay. SDIMC volunteers are hoping to unveil a new website with a different content management system, drupal, sometime in late October or November.

Up to 1000 People Use Their Bodies to Demand Impeachment
The fourth Beach Impeach action was held on Sunday, October 7th, in a new location- the Berkeley Marina. Up to 1000 people participated, including such notables as Cindy Sheehan, Cynthia McKinney, Berkeley City Councilmember Kriss Worthington, and former Berkeley Mayoral Candidate Zachary Running Wolf. The Beach Impeach action was held on the last day of Fleet Week in San Francisco. After Beach Impeach 4, CodePink led a march from Cesar Chavez Park and up University Ave to a Marine Officer Recruiting Station to say, "NO Military Predators in OUR Town!"

Gay Shame SF and LAGAI-Queer Insurrection will sponsor an "HRC sweatshop play land" for kids of all ages at the 19th and Castro Streets during the Castro Street Fair in San Francisco on Sunday, October 7th. The playland will ask "how can the Human Rights Campaign claim to be for the rights of humans, while cheering on corporate culture and selling goods manufactured in sweatshops?" Organizers will point out that corporations such as Coors, Nike, Chevron, and Merck aim to maximize profits, even at the expense of workers' safety and human rights. The playland, which will be for kids of all ages, will include a sewing machine, a button press, a paint fume bouncy tent, and more.

Santa Cruz City Council to Consider Ban on Public Assembly in Parking Lots
Robert Norse writes, "Vice-Mayor Ryan Coonerty's latest attack on the Constitution is a new local law. It will expand a bad law passed last year to ban lingering in a city parking garage. Coonerty's expansion will ban all those not parking a car or auto from all downtown city parking garages and now all downtown city parking lots. It will be coming to City Council for a first reading in the evening of Tuesday, October 9th. No more Food Not Bombs or Drum Circles on Wednesday. Cars, yes. Human interaction, no."

Hundreds of Burmese activists and supporters protested outside of the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco Friday October 5th, to confront the government's support of military oppression in Myanmar. Nyunt Than, President of Burmese American Democratic Alliance (BADA) said the Chinese government should use its influence to stop the killings in Burma. The French government and France's largest company, Total, are also struggling to contain growing criticism of the oil company's record in Burma.

Hundreds of workers, clergy, and community supporters held a rally Thursday, October 4, in front of Adobe Systems in San Jose. The rally, which was organized by UNITE HERE! and SEIU, called on Silicon Valley technology companies to take responsibility for the conditions faced by cafeteria workers, janitors, and security workers on their corporate campuses.

Organizers Say, "All Out for Mumia Abu-Jamal!"
On May 17th, the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia heard oral arguments in the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal. A decision is expected sometime very soon. Organizers have called for protests to take place if the Court rules to uphold the death sentence or denies Mumia’s appeals for either a new trial or new hearing the day after a decision - or on Monday if the decision falls on Friday or Saturday.

Santa Cruz and Monterey County to be Sprayed for Light Brown Apple Moth
Helping Our Peninsula's Environment (HOPE), an organization dedicated to protecting the natural environment, sued the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) because they violated California's Environmental Quality Act. CDFA refused to prepare an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) claiming they are exempt because it is an emergency. CDFA plans to aerially re-spray the Monterey Peninsula with Suterra's Checkmate pesticide (a moth pheromone) starting October 9th.

Upcoming Protests to Show Outrage Over OPD Killing of Gary King, Jr.
North Oakland residents and the family of Gary King, Jr. continue to show their outrage over the fact that the police officer who shot Gary is still on the force. On Wednesday, October 3rd, people will gather for a protest at the Oakland Police Department, 455 7th Street (between Broadway & Washington) at 3pm. On Thursdays, starting with October 4th, there will be
demonstrations at 12 noon on the steps of Oakland City Hall.

The first national referendum on neo-liberal policies
On October 7th, Costa Ricans will go to the polls for a referendum on the Central America - Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA/TLC in Spanish). The latest move on the U.S. neo-liberal agenda for Latin America has met widespread resistance in Costa Rica. Anti-CAFTA marches and protests there led to the national referendum and the resignation of a vice president. A solidarity event with the anti-CAFTA resistance in Costa Rica will be held at Station 40 on Sunday, September 30th, at 6pm.

15 Years of Critical Mass
For just a couple of hours on the last Friday of each month, hundreds of cyclists informally ride together to claim the streets which are normally ruled by automobiles. The gathering is part celebration and part peaceful protest. The messages of the event: that we still have a choice to live our lives in a way that is more thoughtful of the world's resources, to live in a way that is more socially nurturing of life and health, and to live our lives with more joy. The ride on September 28th marked the spontaneous demonstration's 15th year.
On September 27th, the first day of UCSC's Fall quarter, service workers organized with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 3299 initiated an informational picket in the Baytree Plaza demanding a fair labor contract. Workers, some with their families, were joined by student allies for a rally to send a strong message to UC administration that AFSCME, the Student Worker Coalition for Justice and graduate students organized with UAW Local 2865 are united in demanding that UC prioritize workers, students and their families.

Unfair Labor Practice Charges Filed Against University of California
United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 2865, the Union representing over 12,000 Teaching Assistants, Tutors, and Readers throughout the University of California (UC) system, is in the process of filing dozens of unfair labor practice (ULPs) charges against the UC. The Union may call a strike over these ULPs if the charges are not resolved and agreement reached by the expiration of the current contract, September 30th. UAW 2865 recently released a public statement which had over 6,500 signatures from members.
On September 26th, the DEA raided five locations that it claimed were connected to Tainted, Inc., which is a supplier of medical cannabis "edibles" that can be found in dozens of medical marijuana dispensaries in California. Heavily armed
federal agents seized cannabis plants and medicinal edibles, arrested
three people and killed at least one employee's dog. Edible cannabis products provide an
alternative to smoking cannabis and are preferred by many patients. The
products made by Tainted, Inc. are available only through medical cannabis
dispensaries and carry prominent warning labels.

Sentencing for Eric McDavid on December 6th
On September 27th, the jury in the case of United
States vs. Eric McDavid returned a verdict of "guilty." Eric faces five to twenty years in federal prison.
His fellow defendants had accepted plea deals from the government and testified in the case. McDavid's lawyer argued that he was a victim of entrapment by "Anna" because of the money and help that she had provided. The
sentencing is scheduled for Thursday, December 6th. Sacramento Prisoner Support is asking that people continue to call the jail and request that Eric be given vegan food.

Security Workers Demand Liveable wages and Affordable Healthcare
San Francisco’s security workers took to the streets September 24th through September 28th for a week of direct action to demand that the city’s wealthiest property owners, including Shorenstein, Morgan Stanley and Hines, give them a living wage and decent health care benefits. San Francisco’s security workers, who are mostly people of color and recent immigrants, earn less than other staff in the city’s commercial property buildings, including window washers, parking attendants, and janitors.

On Saturday September 22nd, over 150 people came together from across California to participate in Lyrical Revolt, an event put on by the Youth & Student A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition at Counter Pulse in San Francisco. The night was filled with politically conscious Hip Hop, spoken word, and speeches from such organizations as the Brown Berets of Watsonville and Youth Alive.

Gary King Killed by OPD
On September 20th, a police officer shot and killed a man on the street in North Oakland. Gary King, age 20, had just exited a store on the corner of 54th street and MLK. Apparently an Oakland police sergeant approached him for questioning. The details of what happened next are unclear, but it seems that it involved the officer using a taser. King pulled away and it appears that during his attempt to flee, the officer shot him twice in the back. A memorial with candles and personal items is set up at the place where the shooting occurred. On September 24th, over 100 family, friends, neighbors and other concerned people protested at Oakland City Hall against the murder of Gary King. There will a protest every Thursday at 12 noon at Oakland City Hall

Jena 6 Protests
Over 60,000 people from across the country gathered in Jena, Louisiana on Thursday, September 20th, to protest the pending charges against six African American high school students. The six students were charged with felonies after a fight that started after nooses were hung outside their high school. Protests were also held in cities across the United States. At UC Berkeley, over 1,000 protesters gathered in Sproul Plaza at 12pm. In San Francisco, over 200 people rallied at Powell and Market.

Mistrial in Rod Coronado Free Speech Case
On September 19th, after more than two full days of deliberation, a 12-person jury informed Judge Jeffrey Miller they were hopelessly deadlocked and determined that further deliberation would not deliver unanimity. Outside the courtroom, attorneys were informed that the majority was voting for acquittal of the environmental and animal rights activist on trial for a speech he gave in San Diego in 2003.
