Tennessee Residents Plan Nashville Solidarity Rally to Close the SOA |

 Rally to Demand "Zero Tolerance for Torture" and Closure of U.S. Army's School of the Americas
Tennesseans will rally Saturday, November 18 in Nashville and then stage a funeral procession to express our mourning and rage against ongoing training of Latin American soldiers at the infamous US "School of Assassins". The rally will begin at 1 p.m. at Commerce St. and 4th Ave. North in downtown Nashville, cite of the historical marker for William Walker, a Nashville resident who invaded Central America in the 1850's and declared himself ruler of Nicaragua, and then re-instituted slavery in that country (previously made illegal in 1824). The rally will express support for the estimated 20,000 thousands who will rally at Fort Benning, Georgia to demand a dramatic shift in U.S. foreign policy and the closure of the controversial U.S. Army's School of the Americas (SOA). Participants will be starkly dressed in funeral/mourning outfits and will draw attention with props to the shocking results of US foreign policy in Latin America. |

DOE Hosts Oak Ridge Hearings On New Nuclear Bomb Factories |

 On Monday, November 13th the Department of Energy hosted a public forum attended by members of the Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance as well as concerned community members about the possibility of constructing new nuclear bomb factories at the Oak Ridge Complex. The hearing was part of a series of hearings being held in Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Texas, New Mexico, Nevada and California. The Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance has released a statement claiming that there is no necessity to build another nuclear bomb factory at the Oak Ridge Complex and that instead the United States should be dismantling its nuclear weapons infrastructure. |

 My congradulations to the fair city of Knoxville for its latest strike against the scourge of tourism (only a few letters short of “terrorist”—coincidence?) here in Knoxville . I am of course referring to that pit of tourist inequity—the so called “candy factory.” Artists, artwork, sculptures, dance, music, vegetarian feasts—like cheese for rats there was no end of community tourist attracting activities at the “candy factory” until our city squashed it dead like the insect it was. Thank god it’s now safe in the hands of developers and the wealthy that will get the private condo’s they deserve. |

Stephen D. Halford, Director-Chief Fire Department concludes: “...I do believe, however, that there is a reasonable probability that Tara Cole’s body could have been discovered sooner, had the barge been moved sooner.” (Page 8).  In his quest for the Senate Jr. has forgotten his base and now panders to the conservative agenda. In fact, his policies and voting record in the House are more in line with Republican credo. My conscience won't let me vote for him now. Sept. 27 he voted to approve the Military Commissions Act of 2006 which allows the death sentence for "alien unlawful enemy combatants" without a trial before our federal courts, but instead before a military tribunal. |

The goal of the convention is to identify priority issues and turn out eligible New American Voters. Joining a national “Get Out the Vote” (GOTV) effort, TIRRC has, for the past three years, played a leading role in registering immigrant voters in Tennessee. |

Environmental Activists Protest Metro Plans to Recycle Sewer Sludge as Fertilizer |

 Nashville, TN: There is a new Metro Water & Sewer facility under construction and due to open in fall of 2007, and it is moving in the direction of recycling sludge as fertilizer to be applied on grazing land, cropland and orchards. Bruce Wood, an environmental activist, with Bring Urban Recycling to Nashville Today warns, "Do not be tricked into believing this is a treat. Citizens must educate themselves on this issue and demand that city leaders not allow this to happen." Members of BURNT, the Green Party and concerned citizens will gather on Tuesday October 31, 2006 at 3 p.m. at the Sewage Treatment Facility, Metro Water Department at 1600 2nd Avenue North (37208) and Cement Plant Road to protest with the theme 'No More "Tricks" That Sewer Sludge Is a "Treat"' |

Brad Will, Indymedia Reporter, Murdered While Reporting on Mexico Demonstration |

 Brad Will, 36, a documentary filmmaker and reporter for Indymedia in New York, Bolivia and Brazil, died today of a gunshot to the chest when pro-government attackers opened fire on a barricade in the neighborhood of Santa Lucia El Camino, on the outskirts of Oaxaca, Mexico. He died with his video camera in his hands.
Brad went to Oaxaca in early October to document the story that Commercial Media simulators like Rebecca Romero of Associated Press distort instead of report: the story of a people sick and tired of repression and injustice, who take back the government that rightfully is theirs. In that context, his assassination is also a consequence of what happens when independent media must do the work that Big Media fails to do: to tell the truth. My friend and colleague since 1996 when we labored together at 88.7 FM Steal This Radio on New York’s Lower East Side, I bumped into him again in Bolivia in 2004 during a public reception held by the Narco News School of Authentic Journalism, and again on the Yucatán peninsula last January where he came to cover the beginnings of the Zapatista Other Campaign – Brad died to bring the authentic story to the world. |
