STOP G20 Convergence Actions, Melbourne
Update: SUNDAY 19 NOVEMBER - POLICE ATTACK PROTESTORS: a group of 50 demonstrators were beaten and trampled by police during a peaceful anti-G20 protest inside the foyer of the Melbourne museum. A woman was severely injured after police used batons and fists to disperse the small group of singing, dancing demonstrators. Several hundred police, including two divisions of riot police, were deployed in the incident... READ MORE

STOP G20 - Melbourne - NOVEMBER 17-19, 2006: The world's business and government gurus have invaded, polluted, colluded and arrived in Australia to discuss new ways to exploite and plunder the global poor. Meanwhile thousands of concerned Australians have taken to the streets, banks and corporate offices of Melbourne's CBD to oppose the fortress-style meeting. On Friday businesses which profit from war were targeted by G20 Protests.

radical cheers!
Demonstrators challenge the G20's policies that push corporate-led globalisation, neoliberalism and capitalism onto the world's people and ecosystems, and to present alternatives.

Australia's Guantanamo on remote Christmas Island
From the newswire: November 17, 2006

"A new maximum security immigration detention complex under construction on Christmas Island, has been dubbed "Australia's Guantanamo Bay". Australia's new remote offshore detention centre will have cameras in bedrooms, electric fences and electronically controlled doors - to force centre-wide lock-downs. The level of security and surveillance, greater than at any existing detention centre, makes parts of the complex comparable to a maximum security prison."

Christmas Island's residents are worried about the effects the controversial, environmentally damaging detention centre will have on the island's tourism industry - and the island's fragile ecosystem. The 1200 bed centre, is said to cost more than $300million...

Piggery Action: animal rights groups lock-on to stop abuse
"...most pork, ham and bacon produced in Australia remains something that no ethical person can possibly justify eating..." - Professor Peter Singer

From the Newswire - DIRECT ACTION: On Monday 13th November, 24 animal liberationists chained themselves into pig pens at Wasleys' piggery in South Australia to highlight concerns over the dire conditions at a pig-farm part owned by Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone.

The group entered the Wasleys property prompting an eight-hour stand-off with police. Armed with video cameras they gathered evidence of pigs held in undersize pens at the site. The group say the footage will be used to launch another prosecution against the business. The group chained themselves to metal bars and called police.

Animal Liberation spokesperson Mark Pearson said the 24 people involved in the Wasleys action agreed to leave in return for assurances their video material would not be seized. Police did not lay charges. Mr Pearson said they discovered at least seven pigs needing treatment - including two that had to be removed and possibly destroyed. "This a direct consequence of having to live in such extreme confinement, on concrete, unable to exercise."

Wasleys' piggery is not alone. Around 95% of all the breeding pigs in Australia are kept in intensive indoor systems similar to Wasleys. Animal Liberation say the Wasleys' pens are smaller than suggested in the code of conduct, but because the code is not legally binding, governments around Australia allow that method of farming and we can't take action.

The RSPCA say a pregnant sow will spend most of her life on a concrete floor in a metal crate 60cm wide. Australian Pork Limited has rejected claims of cruelty to pigs. CEO Andrew Spencer says "this is really the motivation of the pig farmer, he has to have productive animals."

Last month, animal rights groups formed to launch a new advertising campaign to highlight the ongoing abusive practice of factory farmed pigs. The new group 'Prisons to Paddocks' say the majority of Australia's 320,000 sows and their offspring spend their entire lives in restricted, and "cruel" environments. Australian Pork Limited have refused to meet with Animals Australia to discuss their concerns.

FPC destroy Quokka habitatUPDATE: ARCADIA FOREST RESCUE WEEK ONE

The WA Forest Products Commission began logging operations last week in Coupe 03 of the Arcadia Forest, near Collie in WA's south-west. Arcadia’s fragile Jarrah forest is home to a range of endangered flora and fauna and a small colony of 15 Northern Jarrah Mainland quokkas, which is listed as vulnerable.

A report from the camp states that whilst spirits are high: "Seven arrests were made last week - all trespass and obstructing a public officer. Work has already begun with trees already felled in this fragile ecosystem. Four roads have been carved into the forest floor habitat. The flora and fauna of this area is being destroyed by the WA Forest Products Commission. Logs will be sold to Tasmanian giant "Gunns Ltd". Other timber will be burnt to supply Simcoa's silica plant. The area is a habitat for the mainland Quokka - this species is considered at risk. New energy needed now to sustain the camp and maintain the blockade actions. Phone 0428 685 562..."

The underpinning premise of the Howard government's recent energy "black" paper is that coal, oil and gas will meet the bulk of Australia's energy needs for the foreseeable future.

A central part of the plan is the totally uncosted option of geosequestration (burying carbon dioxide underground), which is at least ten to 15 years away and cannot be applied to any existing coal fired power station.

Australian environment groups and sustainable energy businesses have shown how, with existing technology and assuming no technological breakthroughs at all, Australia could halve greenhouse gas emissions from stationary energy by 2040.

A key part of the plan is to build no new coal-fired power stations and to retire existing ones as they reach their use-by dates. Despite this the Australian government continues to approve more coal fired power stations..."
