"Strangled by a Ring of Steel"
A Week in Palestine for the Olive Harvest
In the second report by Bristolian Ed Hill of BristolComputers4Palestine at the Zaytoun Olive harvest tour of Palestine. Ed writes; I have been telling the media in the UK about the town being "strangled by a ring of steel". But when I arrived and saw the gates and the miles of fencing it was a shock to see it with my own eyes. The "Separation Barrier Wall/Fence" stretches along the hillside so-say protecting the settlement of Ariel. This will eventually become the de-facto new border with Israel, even though it is more then ten miles inside the west Bank...It is such an injustice that this innocent town of farmers, who just want to get on quietly with their own lives, are being treated in this way....In addition to this, we spoke to people who have been victims of army raids into the town. These raids have been happening almost every night over the last week, usually between midnight and four in the morning. Full Article.

Write to planning BEFORE 13 Dec 2006
UPDATED (11th Nov): Toby Lewis writes: HofieldROSE (Residents' Opposition to Stadium Expansion) is organising information to help you make your opinions heard.
Please Visit Our Site:
There you will find informaiton on who to write to, what to tell them and you can help out in other ways too. Note that various "deadline" dates have been mentioned. The real deadline is 13 December when the planning committee meets to decide whether to accept the plan or to reject it. You need to take action now and not wait for the deadline because once the plan is accepted there is no turning back and no appeals process. This is your last chance. Full Article

flyboi81 writes: Bristol Rovers propose to increase the stadium capacity from 12,000 to 18,000 and include a hotel and rooms for 546 students... how much more parking and traffic chaos can Horfield take? Do you have trouble parking near your house on match days? Are you troubled by noise, petty vandalism & litter from fans? Do you feel your activities have to be fitted around sports fixtures? THEN TAKE ACTION NOW! Comment on the proposals (application 06/03850/F) in writing to: Kit Stokes, Planning Dept. Bristol Airport Expansion: Flying In The Face of Stern
Your Chance to Have a Say on Bristol Airport Expansion
Following the Stern Report and with reports suggesting that 'Global growth in carbon emissions is "out of control"' - Bristol International Airport’s (BIA) Master Plan is launched. In response Stop Bristol Airport Expansion (SBAE) campaign reported on Bristol Indymedia that the Master Plan could influence planning decisions, despite being a business plan and not a planning document. They write; We will be closely scrutinising the plan in the light of the Stern Report published last week and last Saturday’s Climate Chaos rally. The Stern Report has emphasised the chaos and economic disaster that will follow if climate change is left unchecked, and acknowledges that aviation is the fastest growing source of CO2 emissions. The report should be a wake-up call for the Government and Local Authorities that the planned expansion of airports such as Bristol will damage the economy rather than enhance it. The last chance to oppose the expansion of Bristol Airport begins today and runs until 22 December....SBAE believe that the only way to halt the increase in greenhouse gases produced from aviation is to stop creating the demand for more flights. The demand for air travel must be managed to protect local communities from more disturbance from noise, and more traffic while safeguarding the environment for future generations....To respond to the plans, write to North Somerset Council at: Bristol International Airport Master Plan Consultation",c/o Kate Durston, Development Control, North Somerset Council, Somerset House, Oxford Street, Weston super Mare,BS23 1TG or email: dccomments@n-somerset.gov.uk. ‘Remember All The Dead’ Bristol Vigil
Sat 11th Nov @2pm, Bristol City Cente, St. Augustines Parade
Supporters of Bristol Stop The War Coalition will be gathering in the Centre opposite the Hippodrome on Saturday 11th November at 2pm to read the names of the dead of all nations in the illegal war in Iraq.
info@bristolstopwar writes: Join Bristol Stop The War Coalition In reading the names of the dead of all nations in the illegal war in Iraq. 11th November is Remembrance Day, when the government and media encourage us to remember the deaths of British soldiers. British soldiers were sent to Iraq because of the lies and duplicity of our government. In Iraq, British soldiers represent a very small proportion of the total casualties. So do US soldiers. Most of the dead are Iraqis. Bristol Stop The War Coalition believes it is important that all those who have been killed in the current wars should be remembered. The actions of our government have not only led to the death and injury of hundreds of British soldiers but also the death and injury of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and Afghans. The Lancet Report, based on well-established methodologies, estimates 655,000 Iraqi deaths directly caused by the invasion and occupation. Perhaps Bush and Blair should stand trial for ‘crimes against humanity’. 'Bristol Computers 4 Palestine' Project
Makes Its First Donation
This project aims to ship recycled computers from Bristol to small towns in Palestine. There they will be used for education, youth work, and for general use by all sections of the community. Read More
Ed Hill writes: Bristol Computers4Palestine made its first donation. A digital camera and laptop computer were presented to Suzana Zorko Founder/director of the CHILDREN OF BETHANY PROJECT. The Children Of Behany Project takes its name from the nearby Christian community around the Bethany area, where by tradition Jesus stated his journey into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. It raises funds for children’s entertainment and cultural trips. For instance to the zoo, for a recent international puppet festival, and shortly the premiere performance of the first Palestine Circus troupe in Bethlehem.

Suzana Zorko says “The Wall cuts us off here, like a limb severed from the rest of the body. Without these trips there is almost nothing for young people to do here and very little hope. The donation of the camera and laptop will enable us to record our work and maintain our website and to communicate our project, both locally and internationally, to attract fund-raising for this essential work for our community”. The donation was made in the area of Al-Eizariya where the Israeli Wall cuts straight across the main dual carriage-way that previously linked the area to Jerusalem ... Bristol has a round-about link with this project. Local activist Jo Wilding did a stint with the Circus2Iraq shortly after the War. However the troupe subsequently had to leave Iraq and came to Palestine for a tour of several months. During this time they performed in the Al-Eizariya and Abu Dis areas and trained local Palestinians in circus skills to form the first Palestine Circus group, who will perform for the first time in Bethlehem next weekend. Bristle: Not Looking for a New England
Nationalism, Identity & History
Editor George writes: Issue 23 of Bristle magazine is out now, sticking it’s size 10’s (and 9’s, 7’s, 5’s…) into the nationalism & identity issues with a special feature. "Welcome, dear reader, to our humble offering of alternative print media opposing the forces of darkness – capital, the state and religious fundamentalists." (Bristle 23, editorial, page 1)...Our special feature includes English history, asks why the working class ain’t working, has an Easton Cowboy reflecting on footie & flag-waving, an Iranian woman on her complicated situation, a considered rant on tribalism, a polemic conclusion, and a look at St. George: "It was a good thing St. George, or al-Khadra as Arab people call him, never bothered to visit England. According to legend, the Romans tortured him for 7 days before they executed him. If he had a done a runner and sought refuge on English shores, the BNP and other flag-waving right-wingers would want him deported as a bogus asylum seeker." (Bristle 23, special feature, page 11)... Bristol Indymedia Film Night: Mission Against Terror
Monday 6th November 2006 @ Cube Cinema
Monday 6th November 2006 @ Cube Cinema. Doors open 7.30pm, film starts at 8pm. £3/4 though nobody turned away for lack of funds. Organised in conjuction with the Bristol Cuba Solidarity group.

MISSION AGAINST TERROR, a documentary about terrorism against Cuba and the case of the Cuban Five, written and directed by Bernie Dwyer and Roberto Ruiz Rebo. English/Spanish with subtitles. The film will be followed by a discussion led by a speaker from the Cuba Solidarity Campaign national executive. In June 1998 the Cuban authorities gave information to the FBI about the US based groups and the activities they planned against Cuba. However, instead of arresting the terrorists, the FBI arrested the five Cubans who had provided much of the information. They were subjected to a trial which US civil rights lawyer, Leonard Weinglass, calls a “violation” from start to finish, and were locked away for a total of three life sentences plus 68 years. Their trial took place in Miami, an environment entirely hostile to the accused – it is widely accepted that the anti-Castro Cuban-American community in Miami wields enormous political influence. There are very few cases that are political by their nature. This was one. Full Article

As the Stern hits the front pages, Crash writes: Reading the liberal press these days one could be forgiven for thinking that climate change is a problem that we all agree is serious, and which we now know can easily be fixed. Just a little tinkering at the edges of the economic system - sacrificing 1% of GDP - to avert climate chaos. What more could Blair and Brown want - a simple remedy to keep business as usual ticking along nicely....But quietly the scientists and a few radicals point out that joining this cosy consensus is like boarding a boat bound for disaster. The Stern report, for all its economic precision, fails to answer how a planet of finite resources can support demand for their infinite exploitation. Growth Unlimited (TM), and its demands on these finite resources is non-negotiable -- so the only way of squaring the circle is to continue to have future targets, rather than current measures to reduce energy use....And on a local level, the picture is more dismal: Bristol City Council merely aims to effectively stabilise emissions, never mind reduce them, while Growth Unlimited (TM) continues to be the cult worshipped at Bristol Airport...Full article
