What do the Candidates for Governor Have to Say About Global Warming?
by Michael Neuman
Why aren't we hearing from the candidates wanting to be governor about their plans for confronting global warming in Wisconsin?
It's not as if global warming is new anymore. According to the latest newspaper reports, global warming has already been changing Wisconsin. The Wisconsin State Journal reported on Thursday that changes have been reported in numerous peer-reviewed studies: "on the birds that trill in our backyards, the lake ice upon which we plop our ice-fishing buckets, the aspen trees that grace our parks" [Ron Seely, Wisconsin State Journal, 10/12/06].
Yet despite two full hours of debate between the two major party gubernatorial candidates (Green Party candidate for governor was not invited to the debates), the issue of the changing climate in Wisconsin as a result of the buildup of global warming gases in the atmosphere has not even been raised as an issue for debate by those running the debates.
It can safely be said the changes that have already occurred in Wisconsin's as a result of global warming are nothing compared to what's predicted for the coming decades. By century's end, we can expect to experience more severe drought during Wisconsin's growing season, heavier flooding, deadlier heat waves, stronger storms, increased insect infestation and increased proliferation of disease, to cite the more commonly mentioned consequences of too much dependence on fossil fuel burning.
Shouldn't the candidates for Wisconsin governor being asked to debate solutions to this very real problem relevant to Wisconsin's future and its current and future citizens? |

Madison Area's Transportation Future at a Crossroads
by Michael Neuman
The Madison area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) held a public hearing and meeting on its Draft Regional Transportation Plan 2030 for Madison and Dane County at 5:00 PM Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at the Monona Terrace.
The public was given the opportunity to provide comment on the MPO draft plan and to recommend to community leaders how they should proceed in addressing the current and projected future transportation related problems affecting the region.
The majority of those who testified stated concerns over too much of the public's money being spent on road capacity expansion and not enough on mass transit and transportation demand reduction incentives.
Several representives of the newly created "Madison Area Bus Advocates" organization spoke in favor of the creation of a Regional Transit Authority with funding authorization to expand Madison's bus system availability in the region.
Written comments on the draft plan will be accepted through October 18, 2006 and should be sent to: MPO, 121 S. Pinckney Street, Suite 400, Madison, WI 53703. |

DNR Public Hearings on Enbridge Oil Sands Petroleum Pipeline Expansion in Wisconsin Begin Tonight!
by Michael T. Neuman
Public hearings on a new 42-inch petroleum pipeline from Superior to Delavan, Wisconsin are being held in Hayward September 19, in Marshfield September 20th and in Portage September 21st on an application to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for permits to construct the pipeline along the 321-mile route crossing from northwest to southeast Wisconsin.
The pipeline would be used to transport extracted “tar sands” or “oil sands” petroleum from northeast Alberta, Canada to refineries in northern Illinois and other destinations. A 20-inch return pipeline will allow transport of the excess light end hydrocarbon derivatives, referred to as "diluents", from the U.S. Midwest refining region back to the oil sands production areas in Western Canada.
A map of the proposed project can be found on Page v of:

Tempers Flare Over We the People's Refusal to Allow Green Party Candidate for Governor Into Tonight's Televised Debate
by Michael T. Neuman
In spite of vigorous protest by the Green Party of Wisconsin, gubernatorial candidate Nelson Eisman, Eisman supporters, newspaper editorial boards, as well indications of overwhelming public support for open debates, the "We the People" consortium is continuing to stand by its earlier decision not to allow any third party candidate to compete in its televised and radio broadcast debates to be held tonight and in October.
"We the People calls itself a 'civic journalism project,' Eisman's Campaign manager exclaimed, "as though their events were some sort of public service. As a private organization, they are free to do as they please. Voters, however, need to know that tonight's spectacle is not meant to be an objective, informative part of the democratic process. Rather, it is meant to prop up the two-party status quo." |

We the People Bows to Corporate Sponsors in Banning Green Party Candidate from Gubernatorial Debates
by Michael T. Neuman
Last Friday, the corporate media announced that We the People will be holding two debates between the candidates for Wisconsin governor. What they were relatively quiet about announcing was the fact that they invited only 2 of the 3 candidates vying for governor to participate in the debates. The Green Party's gubernatorial candidate for 2006, Mr. Nelson Eisman, didn't fit their criteria to be eligible for the debates, they said.
Actually, he did. But We the People decided to keep him out of the debates anyway. They should know that they don't represent all of us when the call themselves "We the People". We the People is sponsored by corporations, not people. |

Regional ARA actions against the NSM last saturday
by MKE ARA
On the 25th
After more than a month of promotion and trying to persuade people into caring about something so obvious as fascism in our own backyards we managed to attract a relatively small but more experienced group of down ass folk from the Midwest (mainly from Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago). We held a regional ARA meeting the day before the NSM rally to come to a consensus about what we were willing as a group to do and what seemed possible with the numbers present. Since actual confrontation didn’t seem likely with the projected numbers of the police being 500, with the numbers of our small group being about 20 at the meeting, and 3 layers of fencing, our strategies focused on intimidation of NSM members and prevention or at least a delay of the arrival of their police escorted convoy. |
