The House of Representatives caved to telecom companies and voted to strip Net Neutrality from the COPE Act (Communications Opportunity, Promotion and Enhancement Act). Without it companies like AT&T;, Verizon and Comcast will move to control how and what you watch online. Now COPE is being debated by the Senate. This is a direct threat to independent media. Boston City Council's White Majority Abandons Youth of Color |

Several hundred Boston youth, youth workers and community members converged on Boston City Hall on Wednesday June 28th to demand a budget that would offer more job opportunities to young people. The thirteen city councilors (nine district councilors and four "at-large" or citywide councilors) are required to vote on the mayor's budget each year. |

Unions and community groups show solidarity with Gillette workers |

Gillette recently announced that in October it is closing part of its razorblade packaging center affecting more than a hundred jobs. The decision is the latest in a series of job cuts by Gillette's new owner, the giant multi-national conglomerate Procter & Gamble based in Cincinnati, OH. |

Somerville 5 Jury Returns Mixed Verdict |

Boston--After deliberating all day, jurors found Somerville Five defendants Calvin Belfon, Jr and Isaiah Anderson 'not guilty' of all felony charges but 'guilty' of several misdemeanors. Their lawyers immediately filed appeals on their behalf. A quiet tension greeted the jurors as they filed into the courtroom at 4:15 in the afternoon. Several of the jurors smiled. But the smiles were deceptive, and soon there were tears in the eyes of friends, family members, and supporters as the indictments and verdicts were read out and repeated back one by one, according to a precise ritual ordained by the Commonwealth. |

On June 17, 2006 the Boston based Organizer's Collaborative (OC) held their 7th annual Grassroots use of Technology Conference (http://organizerscollaborative.org) at UMass Boston's bayside campus. The Organizer's Collaborative is an organization of over 500 individual members and member orgs that are working together to advance the use of technology for social change. OC believes that all non-profits and community groups, regardless of size or income, should have access to up-to-date technology that enhances their ability to carry out their mission. |

Roxbury Organizers Continue to Fight Biolab |

Despite the recent ground-breaking of Boston University's BioSafety Level 4 laboratory, Roxbury organizers are still trying to stop its construction. The lab, which would test deadly pathogens such as anthrax and ebola, purportedly using scores of animals in the process, would be located next to the Roxbury neighborhood, putting Roxbury residents at grave risk in the case of a leak. |

43 Events to Resist the Green Scare World Wide |

Boston--December 7, 2005, marked the beginning of the largest roundup of environmental and animal rights activists in U.S. history. There have now been nearly 20 arrests and many Grand Jury subpoenas.
The nation-wide sweep of arrests, dubbed “Operation Backfire,” has been described by the FBI as a major hit to environmentalists and animal rights activists who engage in destruction of property as a means to defend wild lands and lives of animals. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales stated in January that, “Investigating and preventing animal rights and environmental extremism is one of the FBI’s highest domestic priorities”.
FRIDAY, JUNE 9th: benefit show and screening of 22/8. SUNDAY, JUNE 11th: symbolic demo at the federal building where different organizations will be speaking about the green scare. |

T Fare Hike Hearings Off to a Rough Start |

Boston -- The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority held the first of a series of public hearings about a proposed subway and bus fare increase Tuesday in an overflowing and contentious meeting room at the Boston Public Library. Hundreds of people filled the room in the library’s Copley Square branch to express their opposition to the fare increase. |
