Grand Jury Subpoena in Olympia

 There is another Grand Jury Subpoena regarding the Green Scare: Jim Dawson received a subpoena to appear before the Grand Jury in Seattle at the Federal District Court on July 6 at 9:00 AM. There will be a rally at 8:30 AM outside of the courthouse. Carpools will be leaving from the Grocery Outlet parking lot at 6:30 AM. Jim needs our support.  There will be an emergency protest to defend the Palestinian people and demand that the US cut-off all aid to Israel. This will take place on Friday, June 30, at Westlake Park, 4th and Pine, from 5-6 PM.

Come Join Us! Olympia response to Nazi rally

The neo-Nazi group, National Socialist Movement, (NSM) is planning a major rally where they are inviting white supremacists from many states to Olympia. Their rally of hatred is scheduled for this coming Monday, July 3rd from 2 to 4 P.M. at the steps of the Legislative Bldg at the State Capitol. We hope to surround them on Monday afternoon and turn our backs
on them and turn their rally into one for racial, economic and social justice, and to non-violently make it clear that Nazis are not welcome in Olympia or anywhere. Many of us will be dressed as clowns.

There will be anti-Nazi events running from June 29th through July 3rd in Olympia.

Hundred rally in Olympia for Lt. Watada

 Rally for Lt. Watada in Olympia, June 25, 2006 OLYMPIA, WA (June 26, 2006) - Organized by the Olympia Movement for Justice and Peace, a hundred supporters of Lt. Ehren Watada gathered near the Washington state capitol building yesterday. Holding signs that read “Refuse Illegal War – Thank You Lt. Ehren Watada”, Lt. Watada’s father Robert Watada and step-mother Rosa joined Olympians to span the centrally located Fourth Street Bridge.

2006 Gay Pride Parade

Thousands of people came out to watch the first downtown Seattle Pride Parade. On a hot day, the parade went slowly down 4th Avenue to the Seattle Center. About two and half hours after the Dykes on Bikes started things off with a roar, the last group marched past me. As the parade was moving slowly, I was able to pass many of the paraders as I walked down 4th Avenue to the Seattle Center. Fun to see was block after block of celebrating and cheering spectators. At the Seattle Center I headed for the fountain. Photographing hundreds of people dancing and cooling off under the fountain was a nice way to end my photo assignment.

Dyke Rally & March

 The Dyke rally at SCCC featured a variety of speakers and entertainment. There was the mother of a soldier who had served in Iraq. She gave a detailed argument against the war. Another speaker spoke eloquently about the fight to end stereotyping and racism and how we need a society where lesbians have the freedom to be themselves. Of the entertainment, Chica Boom and The Queen Bees had the crowd roaring with dance and burlesque routines. There were about 500 people in the march. The Capital Hill Community turned out in large numbers to watch the parade and show their support. As with every year, Dykes on bikes were popular with the crowd lining Broadway. Adding spirited rhythm to the festive occasion was Rhythm Envy, a bucket band from Spokane.

 At Seattle Pride today, the biblical fundamentalists that frequently attend queer rights events, preaching their hateful brand of Christianity were drowned out by a small collection of activists, frustrating the fundies into frustrated retreat.

Dr. Terry Tafoya...another Indian fraud or victim of journalistic lynching?

 It pains me every time something like this happens. But what’s worse is the swift-boating that immediately follows such stories. And in Indian Country, such accusations are beyond serious. When you question someone’s “Indianness” you are not just questioning their ethnicity, you are calling into question their worth in its totality. Such charges are generally used sparingly because once the discourse sinks to that level, rationality dissipates and even nice people tend to display their latent bigotries.

Latest Victim of the Green Scare: Briana Waters

 Briana Waters is a devoted, loving mother and partner, a dedicated musician and violin teacher, and a caring friend to many. It has come as quite a shock to everyone who knows her that the government is accusing her of a crime, one that she did not commit. This politically motivated crime, an arson at a University of Washington laboratory building, was committed 5 years ago. There were no injuries. The government is seeking a draconian mandatory minimum sentence of 35 years if Briana is convicted. She has pled not guilty to these charges.

Military Spreading False Info On The sanctuary in Tacoma

 We have been informed that KVI has reported that MP's are being stationed in front of the First United Methodist Church in Tacoma, a church providing a sanctuary for members of the service who oppose the war on legal and moral grounds. This information is completely false, it appears to be an attempt to intimidate members of the military and dissuade them from seeking the services provided by the church.
