Punks Held Offline Sit-in at Commission on Human Rights

by Manila Indymedia
MANILA-- At least 30 punks held a sit-in protest at the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) of the Philippines head office in Quezon City on Friday, demanding an impartial probe into the alleged brutal torture of 11 peers by police in Benguet province, north of Manila.

The demonstration coincided with a scheduled court hearing against the torture victims in La Trinidad, Benguet, on charges of homicide in connection with a February 10 raid on an army base.[ Read More ]

by Manila Indymedia
NEWSBREAK! leftA GROUP of online activists offered an alternative space to protest after the Philippine Government violently prohibited the streets and freedom parks to exercise public assembly and practice freedom of speech. The online activists calling themselves BrigadaElektronica electronic disturbance group organized an “electronic sit-in”- bringing street protest actions on cyberspace.

Electronic sit-in is a form of electronic civil disobedience deriving its name from the sit-ins popular during the civil rights movement of the 1960s, a virtual sit-in attempts to re-create that same action digitally using a DDoS. During an electronic sit-in, hundreds of activists attempt to access a target website simultaneously and repetitively. If done right, this will cause the target website to run slowly or even collapse entirely, preventing anyone from accessing it. [source: wikipedia]

The action officially starts on March 23, 2006 (10:00am Manila time), it will last until the first of April. They are inviting everyone to join and occupy the Philippine National Police website for being a rampant human rights violator.

Sagada11 Solidarity Action Held in Spain

by Jong Pairez (Indymedia Volunteer)
NEWSBREAK! (3/14/2006) Police authorities asked the Quezon City judge to issue a search warrant for Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) headquarters, late this afternoon. The request for the warrant issue is apparently in connection with inciting to sedition charges that similarly forced a local newspaper to shutdown, last month. [ Read More ]
UPDATE! (3/14/2006) Two new articles were included in the opinion column: Beyond the Politics of Representation, the added articles were written as a critique to the previous articles on the current political situation in the Philippines from an autonomist perspective. Barcelona Spain SolidarityBARCELONA, Spain-- Protest Banners were hanged outside the Philippine Embassy, surprising passersby in Barcelona, yesterday (March 13), by a group of unnamed Spanish activists, saying, “Basta de Torturas en las Filipinas (enough torture in the Philippines)” and “11 de Sagada LIBERTAD! (free the Sagada 11!)”

Leaflets were also distributed, informing passersby about the rampant Human Rights violation in the Philippines under the Arroyo Regime. The group of Spanish activists who did a small solidarity action for the unconditional release of Sagada 11, specifically condemned the illegal arrest and violent torture suffered by the eleven young backpackers from the hands of Philippine authorities.

Sagada 11 was named after the eleven backpacker punks and FoodNotBombs volunteers including a fifteen-year-old girl illegally arrested and tortured by Philippine Police and Military last month, while hitch-hiking on their way to Sagada mountains to visit a local tourist destination. Sagada 11 were wrongly accused of Homicide and Robbery charges after the authorities failed to arrest the maoist-leftist New Peoples Army who recently attacked a local Military Camp in Benguet. The eleven backpackers are not whatsoever affiliated to any authoritarian Leftists in the Philippines. They are still currently detained.

Beyond the Politics of Representation

by Manila Indymedia

catWHAT NEXT after the Arroyo Regime is overthrown? Autonomous group of activists and individuals in Manila recently released their views regarding the current political situation in the country, encouraging common people to create an Alternative whom everyone is called upon to participate directly in building their own lives, organizing from below. This outlook negates the Politics of Representation under the program of Transitional Councils and Transitional Revolutionary Government being pushed through by mainstream anti-GMA forces, including the Left and disgruntled Military officers.

Manila Indymedia is featuring these articles collated from its own open-publishing Newswire to share the idea and invite opinions.

blockMANILA INDYMEDIA-- A local newspaper was closed; peaceful protesters were violently dispersed, mass arrests of political dissent and curtailment of basic democratic rights were indiscriminately violated as President Arroyo proclaimed a State of Emergency yesterday afternoon.

Proclamation no. 1017 is a President’s declaration of State of Emergency that believed to be an order to take a direct totalitarian control to suppress political dissent against the regime. The proclamation was declared during the middle of commemorating the 1986 People Power anniversary after she assessed the national situation, saying that the Left, Right and Center is, "in tactical alliance and engaged in a concerted and systematic conspiracy to bring down the duly constituted government elected in May 2004."

President Arroyo was accused of rigging the 2004 elections that maintained her seat of power. She was also the sole authority who raised taxes of basic necessities, assassination of media persons and radical political personalities, cuddles gambling lords, and protects Military Generals who were accused of corruption. These acts of the President foiled unrest among the common masses, rank-in-file military soldiers and junior officers who called upon to oust her regime. Opposition politicians also joined the call to unseat the President from power.
