After relentless pressure from the public, the Conservatives have agreed to a debate on Canada’s role in Afghanistan on Mon., Apr. 10. But a debate is not enough. We also need public involvement and ultimately a vote. Patrick Elie, a Haiti-based political rights activist and former Minister of the first government of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide (1991-96), will speak in 18 cities across Canada in February and March. He is scheduled to speak in Ottawa on March 7 at 7 p.m. at Tom Brown Arena Hall, 141 Bayview Rd., (just off Scott St.). The event is free and not-to-be missed.

On Saturday February Fourth members of Solidarity Across Borders and No One Is Illegal will be in Ottawa to give two workshops. The purpose of the event is twofold. One, to increase knowledge and understanding about how the Canadian Immigration system works (or doesn’t work). And two, to form a grass roots organization in Ottawa devoted to doing refugee/migrant/immigrant casework and campaign work.

Maude Barlow and Roy Romanow will be speaking at a free public forum tonight (Fri. Nov. 4) in Ottawa, to kick-off The Council of Canadians 20th Annual General Meeting. The forum happens from 7-10 p.m. at The Westin Hotel. The Canadian government has failed to consult the public on Canada’s integration with the United States, and the Council of Canadians, Canada’s largest citizen watchdog organization will not sit idly by. The gathering will examine the impact of Canada’s integration with the U.S. on the lives of Canadians.
