Slaughter's Proposals for "Rethinking The War on Terror" Need Rethinking |

When I received notice of the lecture "Rethinking the War on Terror," I was hoping for a refreshing new perspective on the "war on terror," which has been hyped by the Bush administration as a legitimate war for the past three years. This "war" which has resulted in the deaths of over 100,000 Iraqis and has cost the national treasury hundreds of billions of dollars has been presented as a new kind of warfare, which is really just an old kind of warfare in disguise. In 1964, when Lyndon Johnson was president of the United States, there were only 35,000 American troops in Vietnam. By the end of his administration there were 600,000. His war was a "war on terrorists," Vietcong, or as they were called by Robert MacNamara, "Guerilla Insurgents." Sound familiar? Apparently nothing has changed in forty years. |

Bredesen's Proposal to Institute Faith Based Social Services May Open a Can of Worms |
by Charles Sumner Email: President (nospam) Nashville-AU.org |

Governor Bredesen must be cautious in his proposal for government and religious institutions to work hand-in-hand lest he open a can of worms. Americans in need of social services, such as welfare support, job training, emergency shelter, and food/clothing supplies, should be able to get the help they need without being pressured to take part in religious activities. "Faith-based" initiatives, which propose turning the provision of social services over to religious groups, threaten individual rights and could lead to taxpayer support of religious ministries. In those cases where religious groups want to take tax aid to provide relief, they should first agree to run secular programs and drop all forms of religiously based discrimination from their hiring policies. |

Feb 10th - Take Action Against Mountain Range Removal |

The Appalachian Mountains are among the oldest mountains in the world. They contain the most biologically diverse temperate forest and freshwater aquatic ecosystems on the planet. Two hundred million years of wind, water, and ice have eroded the Appalachian mountains to about half of their original height. Massey Energy Co., Arch Coal, National Coal and other corporations have decided that that was much too long and are trying to get the other half in only a few decades. Greedy multinational corporations, with support from corrupt government agencies, are perpetuating the greatest ecological crime in history: the destruction of water-producing mountain ranges. |

TennCare Enrollees Drop Banner During Governor's Speech |

Nashville, TN: TennCare Enrollees dropped banners that read: 323,000 AT RISK and ONE DEATH EVERY 20 HOURS during Governor Bredesen's annual address to the State Legislature Monday Night. Enrollees are upset over Governor Bredesen's plan to drop 323,000 Tennesseans from TennCare, the state's public health insurance program. "Private health insurance companies have been allowed to externalize the costs of sick people onto the state of Tennessee for fifteen years. The Governor is not standing up for socialized medicine. We either need insurance for all Tennesseans or we need the private health insurance companies to cover those of us who are 'uninsurable'," said Lucy Parsons, a TennCare enrollee who participated in Monday's banner drop. |

A Review of Howard Zinn’s "Artists in Times of War" |

Perhaps what a capitalist society does in wartime is not unique, is not different in kind from the everyday occurrences of peacetime. The corporate media slants news reports during war, and does the same between wars. Individuals are arrested and imprisoned for expressing unpopular opinions by judges who champion the grandeur of the very Constitution that they subvert. Racist oppression and class divisions have lives of their own, outside the confines of the military.
Still, it may be truly said that wartime concentrates our attention, focuses on and makes appallingly clear the same social flaws that may be found in times of peace... |
