Gunns Blazing: Boycott Tamar Ridge Wines
from the newswire:
To the tune of $6.5 million, Tasmanian woodchip giant Gunns Timber is
suing both individuals (including Senator Bob Brown) and non-profit
organizations (including the Wilderness Society and Doctors for Native
Forests, Inc.).
Gunns alleges that a total of 20 defendants engaged in a series of
"wrongful acts" that have been detrimental to company profits.
Gunns has been roundly criticized for its anti-ecological forest
management techniques, including the widespread use of toxic chemicals and
fertilizers.
In solidarity with the 20 defendants, a boycott of Tamar Ridge Wines (a
Gunns subsidiary) is hereby called.

GLOBAL WARMING
|
Dec 20 2004
|
Death of a Wild Land
From the newswire:
The world is getting hotter. In the snowfields of sunny Australia,
global warming is visible and measurable. The effects of climate change
have begun and around Kosciuszko it is being felt. The truth is this, in
the not too distant future, the ski fields of Australia will all but
disappear.
The CSIRO tell us that the last decade was the warmest in a hundred
years and 1998 was the warmest year on record. A study into the
financial viability of resorts in the NSW alpine region found that by
2070, 20 percent of the snow cover will disappear and in sixty years the
ski industry in NSW will die.
Four Season Resort Development (FSRD) was born from the realisation that
climate change will kill the ski resort industry around Kosciuszko. The answer
to this dilemma was to encourage more summer visitors. The selling of Perisher
as an all-seasons resort has already begun. But with this expansion comes
more buildings, more infrastructure, more visitors, more wastage and
ultimately, more harm to the local environment.

Goulburn Jail breaches UN standards
Greens MP Lee Rhiannon has called on Justice Minister John
Hatzistergos to bring Goulburn Jail's Maximum Security Wing into line
with United Nations standards, after a prison inmate's covert survey
of his fellow inmates revealed problems with rehabilitation programs
and basic amenities.
Goulburn Jail inmate Christopher Binse secretly issued a
questionnaire to more than 140 of his fellow inmates in C-Wing, and
the results paint a disturbing picture," said Ms Rhiannon.
The survey showed that although most inmates were very keen to
undertake rehabilitation and education programs, they were
overwhelmingly not getting the services they needed. Prisoners are
punished by long-term deprivation of liberty. The role of the prison
is not to inflict boot-camp hardship on prisoners, but to ensure they
don't re-offend when released.
Rehabilitation is crucial to breaking the cycle of criminality. Yet
the prisoners' own testimony reveals that not enough is being done to
ensure they can integrate back into society.
The President of the NSW Bar Association
has written to the Chief Justice of the NSW Supreme Court requesting a
judicial inspection of the HRMU due to concerns about conditions.

and the actions these words produced. Other films such as Por un nuevo

governments in one week. More than fifteen independent cameramen joined
together to produce this collective material, which offers a point of
view of the rebellion different from the one shown by mass media
corporations. (Selected Official Documentary Competition 24th

Peace, Civil Liberties, Intimidation and Harassment in Parramatta
One week before the anniversary of the UN's Universal Declaration of
Human Rights, the direct personal complaints of the Parramatta Lord
Mayor, Julia Finn, have shut down and censored the activities of the
Parramatta Peace Group and its members, on Saturday December 4th.
"Our civil liberties and rights to freely express our wish for Peace have
been curtailed through intimidation, political harassment and heavy
handed bullying during our usual fundraising stall at the Parramatta
Town Hall (every two months)."
"We were threatened with being forcefully removed, fined and all other
bookings for any such events being cancelled. Currently, there are
completed bookings and arrangements for the next six months until
Saturday 18th June, 2005."
This is setting an extremely dangerous precedent. Similar incidents have
been occurring all over Western Sydney, mostly in ALP controlled
councils. Just to name a few cases nearby:
- Blacktown: Council and the Mayor
banning an anti-war art exhibition just last week;
- Fairfield: Council preventing the distribution of papers, leaflets and
fliers in public areas;
- Mt. Druitt: the Western Sydney Peace Group being stopped from holding
rallies and participating in community events;
- Parramatta (AGAIN!): Council stopped the launch of a "Rock the Vote"
event and CD, taking place in the mini-auditorium in the pedestrian
mall by a number of musicians, Frenzal Rhomb, etc. Parramatta Council
made unreasonable requests mounting to political censorship: including
requests for lyrics, any written materials and speeches prior to
approval being granted!
